shopping trip to milan

dh has offered, in a fit of guilt I might add, to take me shopping in Milan for a weekend in september, due to his having entered a marathon the weekend of my birthday and our wedding anniversary. Hmm

My question is anyone been? is it any good? - for the shopping, and general touristy stuff. dh isn't made of money and his idea of what constitutes spending money and mine will differ wildly Grin but I'm thinking I might at least get a lovely handbag out of it. Is the normal 'nice' high street shopping any good, are the designer brands cheaper etc anyone know? TIA

I didn't find much in Milan - but them I'm a size 16. I did see lots of lovely clothes, but most vaguely fashionable clothing there stops at a size 14 or even a 12.

I didn't see any bargains either - mostly high class stuff.

So if you are petite, I'm sure you'll have a whale of a time. If not, don't go.

well I'm a small size 10 at the moment but should be a size 8, my excuse is baby weight but sadly it is all cake! but I am working hard now to get back to an 8 hopefully in time for september, so a good excuse for new clothes Smile
i would rather go to paris as I went to school there for a while and love it but dh isn't keen, although this is meant to be my trip Hmm

I would pick Paris over Milan tbh - definitely more choice.

Hi I went to Milan last year and had a book which had some outlet places, but to be honest they werent that good, still expensive, Bicester is better! There is an outlet place about an hour from Milan, there is a bus that goes there from one of the parks. The outlet is called Fidenza village and that is the best one apparently, definitely worth a day of shopping!
Heres a link to a webiste for some other shops/outlets-www.salvagentemilano.it/
www.factory-outlet-italy.com/en/FO/index.php

Hope thats useful.I went to get a bag and ended up in all the lovely shops, bulgari, Dior, and prada and also tried outlet and ended up getting one in bicester!

Milan is not great for bargains, a small area with very high end shops and then not much else...you may be better in paris or london tbh.Grin

Yes apart from shoe shops and shoe markets (the outdoor-type ones) Milan is not that great unless you want high-end designer stuff. Prices aren't that much lower and as others say, you can get better discounts online. Push for Paris!!

Go to Milan a couple of times a year and really enjoy it because:

  • love Italy
  • have favourite restaurants, cafes, etc where enjoy people-watching in trendy areas, with v. few tourists.
  • like the culture (fantastic cathedral, art galleries, etc),though there's even more of this in other Italian cities such as Rome, and in Paris.
  • like going to the Milan branch of Marina Rinaldi (plus size Max Mara), because its their flagship with best selection of stuff - but it is ££££,and you're not plus size anyway.

Otherwise, shopping not that great. The 'Golden Quadrilateral' has all ths shops you find in Bond St or Knightsbridge, at equally large prices. Italy doesn't really have much of a 'high street scene' compared to UK.

So, if main object shopping with sightseeing thrown in, agree Paris better.
