I need hairstyle advice - i look like Kemal! (and that aint good!)

I'm in the process of growing out a short haircut - my hair is naturally curly and very thick. I'm going through a "i feel old and frumpy" stage and want to grow it a bit longer. HOWEVER - in doing so i now resemble Kemal from BB and seem to have grown myself a rather minging affro cum frizz ball! .

Any suggestions for a mid length curly/wavy haristyle before I shave the whole bloody thing off!!!

Does it always look like that afro frizz. Would an chemical straighner help - there are all sorts of formulations which help or ceramic hair straigners. If its a reasonable length perming can give the frizz a definitive curl/ wave. You just have to bear in mind the amount of work you want to put in daily.
