Are vest tops on women considered chavvy/common/not very nice?

Following on from the little-boys-in-vest-tops thread...

wait- are vest tops on women considered chavvy then? Dn just bought one to wear to a work trial to a beach restaurant- the uniform is denim and breton stripes. Will they think she is a horrible chav if she turns up in a vest top? It is from topshop with thickish straps (not spaghetti) 100% cotton

dont like the use of chavvy/common myself, actually judge people who do but hope you know what I mean in this context as job interviews are all about perception!

I hope not as they're one of my summer staples, however for an interview I would always wear a suit or similar

I think vest tops are fine on children, women, and manual workers. I wear them myself, though never at work or in a formal setting.

Here in Oz, they're often forbidden items for pub/club wear. possibly because the singlet, as it's called, usually navy, is associated with being a bogan.

A bogan is a chav without the pretensions to style.

Horribly, the navy singlet is called a "wife beater", which says it all.

No I think it's alright as long as you've chosen the right size and it's not too small

SixtyFootDoll · 30/07/2010 18:43

Who gives a toss? If you like them wear them.

usualsuspect · 30/07/2010 18:43

I think you can wear what you want ,and fuck what anyone else thinks

Kaloki · 30/07/2010 20:31

Nope, definitely not chavvy. It's been a staple of my wardrobe for years, and I'm very much a goth

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 30/07/2010 20:40

I wear a vest top, I think it depends on what else you are wearing and how much flesh is on show elsewhere though, a bit of breast or a bit of leg, never both (apparantly)

Vest tops Chav .. I have heard it all now.....

SixtyFootDoll · 30/07/2010 22:09

Apparently shhh vests on little boys is chavvy. ANother MN 'rule' for us all to abide by.

shhhh · 31/07/2010 21:19

That's the part of mn I dislike... How people can be so judgemental and it's like everyone should follow...

I agree with your last post sixty foot....

I like vest tops, but think it's when they are worn with chunky mottled arms that make them seem yuk
