Are vest tops on women considered chavvy/common/not very nice?

Following on from the little-boys-in-vest-tops thread...

wait- are vest tops on women considered chavvy then? Dn just bought one to wear to a work trial to a beach restaurant- the uniform is denim and breton stripes. Will they think she is a horrible chav if she turns up in a vest top? It is from topshop with thickish straps (not spaghetti) 100% cotton

dont like the use of chavvy/common myself, actually judge people who do but hope you know what I mean in this context as job interviews are all about perception!

Depends on the arms, I think.

She's a 21 year old well spoken graduate size 12 but her arms are not perfect as she had stretchmarks on them... But still completely inoffensive imo. Best not to risk it?

It's a work trial at the beach, though, it doesn't sound to formal.
Being young & size 12 cancels out the stretchmarks, I think

I wouldn't, vest tops only really suit the toned and, quite possibly, tanned. The rest of us just look slovenly. Maybe she could layer it with a cardi and change?

whats with all this chavvy/common crap, vests are cooler when its hot, thats not common its just common sense

florenceuk · 29/07/2010 22:49

No they're not. Young women can usually get away with anything strappy, although I think it is a peculiarly UK phenomenon (coming from NZ, where strappy tops are much less common and women are in general much more covered up - DH would agree, there is much more flesh on display here, across all classes).

There is a certain look on older women who are usually very brown and a bit wrinkly who wear spaghetti strap vests with bra straps showing - which I don't know if I would classify as common but maybe a bit unwise. But perhaps I am just too unconfident body wise to do this into my 60s and 70s!

My personal pet hate is vest tops on men (all that hairy underarm hair and hairy shoulders - urgh).

She will be wearing jeans and she tried on some breton tees but they didn't look as good as the vest tops as she has a larger bust... Maybe I will tell her to pop down again tomorrow and get a t shirt just in case.
