Size 18/20 Interview Outfit???

I've got a job interview this week which will be my first interview in ten years. I am really nervous.

I had a professional City career which I gave up seven years ago when the DC were born because I just couldn't do both successfully. Now I need the money (and the sense of identity), so I am trying to go back. At last, I have an interview. The question is what can I wear?

There used to be an unspoken dress code in the City which was tailored suit and fitted shirt (tucked in at the waist) and court shoes. I was 35 (felt like 30) when I left and a size 12. Now I am 42 (feel like 45!) and I am a size 18/20 with huge boobs and a BIG FAT TUMMY!

I can't wear my old style but I need to look the part. So can anyone suggest something which will allow me to not stand out and get on with focusing on what i say at this interview?

Please, please!

How about a tailored black dress like this or this

I quite like the look of this jacket in ivory with the black dress but black would also look good. If you go for all black I would go for a bright chiffon scarf or chunky necklace and/or shoes to inject some colour.

Good luck!

Thank you JustBeachy - they would work. It doesn't matter how hot it gets this week, I'll wear an all-in-one control underwear and remember to sit very straight just to reduce the tummy bulge look.

I bought a beautiful Jaeger dress suit in the sale a number of years back. I am a similar size/shape to you, and it was the best thing I ever bought. Try somewhere like there - let them dress you? I loved the shop, they fetched clothes for me, brought me drinks and gave me their honest opinion, even helped me accessorise!

I've just bought a black trouser suit from planet, size 18 but v v generous. I usually just wear that with a thin crinkly cream shirt (untucked, have never been able to get away with tucked in ever ever).

Ps good luck!

Thanks for the ideas. Letting someone help me choose would take a big, deep breath from me because it would mean them looking at my body and considering which of the many flaws to hide. I even name changed for this thread which is stupid because no one knows me anyway.

The daft thing is, I'd never have considered a shop like that before because I thought it would be too expensive.

I second the Jaeger recommedation- also try something like this; Betty jackson stuff is great for curves; structured and comfortable.

tethersend · 25/07/2010 10:15

Jaeger

Though I would change the belt on the Jaeger one.

tethersend · 25/07/2010 10:17

Jaeger again

I have humungous boobs (j-cup) and a corresponding well-padded backside. I find the tailored suits in Next fit me great: this type of thing, with a nice top so you can take off the jacket if you get too warm. A nice pair of heels to make you walk taller, and you're all set.

It can't be easy going for an interview after so long, but remember all the management/negotiation/time-management skills you've perfected as a mother .

you can get a suit from dorothy perkins - and a shirt too - you can look the part.

you can look as professional as a size 12.

i used to be a 18.20 and wore suits to work all the time.

I bought this jacket and matching skirt for an interview and I love it. Out of stock online, but may be some left in a 18 in store.

thanks for all your ideas. Looks like I've got a shopping trip coming up!
