Moulin Rouge summer ball

As above. I am invited to a Moulin Rouge summer ball. Am middle aged, size 10-12, short, a bit of a tummy but not bad considering I possess no black clothes (honest) and no red. I don't want to spend a lot. What do I buy and where do I buy it? Thanks!

Oooh. Love the blue dress! All the other guests were talking about black and red, so I thought I should go the same way. I'm very much a jeans/short skirts/fancy cardis type of girl for work, for going out I have a few "vintage" chiffon and lace dresses in gold/pink/cream. I am Scots/Irish and just look washed out when I wear strong colours. I can see me in the blue, though!
