what do you think of perms?

I know, I know but I really want one. I'm afraid my hairdresser is just going to laugh at me or say no if I ask (shes very honest).

I have longish dark brown hair, "boob length", very very thick - I have loads of hair. Its in quite good condition at the minute. It is sooooo boring

Im just dying for a change but dont want to cut it or colour it so that doesnt leave me with much else really, does it? plus I love curls, mine is quite straight if I blow dry it but if I let it dry itself has a wave in it.

Be blunt please.

My hair is nearly as long as yours and dark too - when I go out on a "special" night out I get curls put in at the hairdressers - I tried heated rollers but my hair is so heavy that it just wouldn't stay in.

Maybe you could get your hair styled with curls at the hairdressers to see what you look like and then ask the hairdressers opinion?

Would love a perm myself but not sure at 40 my age I should be heading back to the 80s

BarbieLovesKen · 18/07/2010 22:19

Thanks for replying LimaCharlie - yeah! I do that too, I usually get GHD curls and am a little sick of them as I think they look too styled, if that makes since, I love the bit of a messy, unstyled look. They are almost too perfect looking, ifykwim.

Tis a toughy, Im the sort if I get something in my head Ill do it, Im just worried Im going to be laughed at or told no. I also have a hair voucher that work got me when I had my ds (5 months) so am really lucky.

Just dying for a change. Think the whole 80's thing is what everyone worrys about, I know some say that perms are out of fashion but poker straight hair is completely out these days too anyway.

Im (almost) 25.

try brushing out your ghd curls with a bristle brush (gently and when hair cooled) then put on some texturising products or do it a few hours before you go out so its dropped.

BarbieLovesKen · 18/07/2010 22:32

ooooh thanks, must try that.. still want something permanent though..

I think perms are fine, they have come a long way since the 80's. I don't think your hairdresser will laugh..be brave and ask. I have naturally curly hair but would happily perm if not.

accidentalchickenkeeper · 18/07/2010 23:11

I've been thinking the same thing OP. My hair is a bit shorter than yours and is naturally wavy, thick and frizzy.

I straighten it because it's quicker than curling it but I much prefer the curly look.

My only worry is that the chemicals might damage my hair.

I say go for it!

BarbieLovesKen · 18/07/2010 23:49

Oooh am so happy with the replies so far!! was sure everyone would say NO WAY!! am worried about chemical damage too ACK...

Feck it, Im going to do, that said I asked my hairdresser for a fringe before and she just said "no" and wouldnt do it..

They are closed on Mondays but am ringing on Tuesday morning. Should I post before and after pics? would that help anyone else decide? Ill happily be guinea pig...

yay...curly rocks!!! post pics

bishboschone · 19/07/2010 08:15

one thing I think you should be warned about it is in my experience men love curls so be warned!!!

OsbegaEthewulf · 19/07/2010 09:17

well I'm having a perm on Friday and my hairdresser isn't laughing (helps that she has fab naturally curly hair and hates straight hair)

I'm only having the top layers done though as oddly enough my hair underneath is naturally wavy and curly and just the top bit is straight

bishboschone · 19/07/2010 10:31

Cool, sounds like she knows what she is talking about.. Will look forward to pics

accidentalchickenkeeper · 19/07/2010 15:39
