Fat girl needs nice (cheap) frock for party!

EccentricaGallumbits · 16/07/2010 14:22

if I can find a frock I'll go to my sister's birthday party.

Unfortunately I am fat (size 18) with flabby arms and gut.

I'd love a nice flowing maxi-type but am worried about flabbyness of arms.

and it'll only be worn the once so begrudge spending more than £20 on it.

any ideas?

Get a wee sleeveless shrug thingy to go over a maxi - plenty of them around. New Look and these type of places will have them cheap. Shrug will come in handy again no doubt. Also acceptable to wear maxis on a nice summery day so you will get more use out of it (if we have any more summery days!). Big women look fab in maxis I think.

EccentricaGallumbits · 16/07/2010 14:27

need a trip to newlook then.

ok....only one I could find under £20

tethersend · 16/07/2010 15:46

this?

FellatioNelson · 16/07/2010 15:54

M&S have got some really great little cropped lightweight cardis with elbow length sleeves, that finish nicely under the bust at the mo - and they are cheap, and in loads of nice colours. perfect for over strappy dresses if you are challenged in the upper arm department. And Republic have loads of pretty maxi dresses quite cheap - don't know about sizes in there though.

izzybiz · 16/07/2010 16:09

I got a lovely black maxi with sleeves in Monsoon, it was £45 but my friend informed me today it had gone into the sale

Maybe worth a look? It was in the beach range, but I dressed it up with a stretch belt and lots of bangles, got loads of complements!

Besom · 16/07/2010 16:10

Tesco have quite cheap ones and this is quite cheap and they have it in black and white.

MadreInglese · 16/07/2010 16:12

I second New Look for fab cheap dresses

You could prob get a nice summery maxi dress and a little bolero shrug type thingy for about £20/£30 together

Or sack the shrug idea and wear a nice pashmina round your shoulders

EccentricaGallumbits · 16/07/2010 16:34

i was in tesco today - they had nothng like that one - it's nice too.

will try monsoon (sale) and newlook.

Firstly, I am not sure a maxi is the best choice, unless you are 6ft and can carry it off, Maxi's are increadibly difficult to wear.

Secondly, don't call yourself fat at size 18, curvy is far better, and imo curvy women, speaking from personal experience, look faaaaar better in structured dresses which highlight the curves rather than trying to 'tent' them, which will make you look a size 22.

Therefore, have given you lots of choices here...

You must go to your sister's party! And size 18 is not Fat. Have you looked on the ASOS website - just put in your size and lots of amazing dresses come up. Here is one from the Curves range that starts at size 20 so might be too big but is lovely and only £14. There are lots more. ASOS customer service is v. good and you can easily return anything not right.

Maryqueenofchocs · 17/07/2010 10:04

Rafaella I agree structured would def look better than tented.

JackieNo · 17/07/2010 10:15

Maybe?

MrsY · 17/07/2010 16:03

Don't be tempted to do sleeveless with a bolero/pashmina if you are concious about your arms.

I have done that in the past and then got hot and A) kept shrug on and sweated, and then had to explain why i was hot but still wearing a cardi
or B) taken shrug off and felt very self concious and uncomfortable.

I don't think maxi's are necessarily a no-go if you a curvy, as some are fitted at the boobs and then flare over tummy and bum. Just don't go for a tent.

Quality · 17/07/2010 16:22

I wouldn't say 18 is fat, I slimmed down to an 18 for my birthday and went mad shopping for clothes for sexy new me!
I went into primark (ok, I went mad, but on a budget) and bought a 9.99 grey silky dress, was a bit clingy but a fiver on a pair of m and s tights fixed that and I felt fabulous.
Small shrug from primark, black sucky in tights from m and s, red slut shoes I already had outfit for £20. You just need to be prepapred to try it on. (pic on profile of dress actually)

Maxi's are not great if you have boobs imo unless they are clingy as they go out and then just fall.

MumsieNonna · 17/07/2010 16:25

Have you looked at the Windsmoor range? They make beautifully cut garments for curvy ladies. I know the price is a little bit more than you want to pay, but if you go for a silk number in their sale - I think you may get more wear out of it. They are much better made than the supermarket dresses too.

Also go for layers and cover the tops of your arms with a loose chiffon or cotton voile top. Avoid linen and man made fibers. A maxi is hard to carry off unless you are tall. I saw a wedding party today in our village and to be honest, some of the women looked like they were wearing their nighties.

Previous posters have also suggested Monsoon. There are some lovely dresses in their sale. Also look at the Phase Eight sale and then there is eBay.

And BTW size 18 is not fat!

EccentricaGallumbits · 17/07/2010 18:13

lovely choices there ladies - much appreciated. it has to be said that structured/shaped is much more flattering and i do look like i'm a walking marquee in a long floaty type.

i tried this on last week and loved it but the arms are a problem and i do think i'd get drunk hot and take off a cardi.

I like that first one, the second is nice but I reckon we can find more glam that that!
Well, I say we but I am shit at this kind of thing so bumping for you

JustBeachy · 18/07/2010 11:59

this and this are pretty or for a bit more at £45 I LOVE this

racingheart · 18/07/2010 13:26

The one you love is gorgeous. There's this at £34. A bit simpler than the one you love but could look fantastic and you'd get loads of wear from it.
