2nd hand jewellery

Would you feel wierd wearing a vintage engagement ring? DP and I are getting engaged and do not have the biggest budget in the world.

I really want an ethical engagement ring and love the Deco style ones. Obviously Fair trade Diamonds cost stacks more than blood ones, so the obvious choice is an antique ring.

But would anyone feel odd with "someone elses ring" not knowing the history and whether it had come froma happy union or not?

I dont think its odd. The history wouldnt trouble me at all - its just an object, but really the only important thing is if it would bother you, if it would then you probably shouldnt get one.

No, not weird at all! I'd love it. I used my parents' wedding ring as my own, even though they got divorced... I love a bit of history, me.

Congratulations btw!

I have mil's engagement ring. Didn't know at the time that sil had also had it until her marriage broke up!!!

But it's mine now, and wouldn't have it any other way. I like old jewellery, and the stories that come with it could be great or not, but who would really know? A seller could make up a fantasy, but only you know where the ring will be in 50 years time. (on your ring finger, of course!)

Mine is a very slender ring with 5 diamonds that we got in Camden Passage antique market, for the princely sum of £60 27 years ago. We spent another £38 (yes, I remember it exactly) having the worn very thin back replaced. I love this ring because it is unobtrusive, I can wear it everyday and sleep in it too and it makes a little sparkly line next to my wedding ring. TBH I've never even thought about who had it before me.

My engagement ring is 2nd hand and it's the most beautiful thing I've ever owned. I really like the fact that it's not quite perfect and that someone else has worn and loved it before me.

Giddyup · 16/07/2010 12:02

Thanks for all of your opinions, I don't have a problem with having a 2nd hand ring at all I don't think. I was interested to hear others opinions as I know this would be the place to tell me any negative ones!

I would not have a problem with it. You would not worry that a house had been lived in and owned by someone else previously. A ring is no different. Choose the most beautiful one you can afford, that would be my advice.

We also deliberately chose an old and differrent ring (we bought it fron John Lewis who did secondhand jewellry)

I have my grandmother's and great grandmother's diamond engagement rings. I love them. I also have a sapphire and diamond art deco ring bought for my 18th birthday - so vintage rings don't bother me in the least.

I have a second hand ring from a jewellers in sussex.. it wasnt cheap mind but I didnt really like the new ones so went for 'vintage'
