when in a 'split' family?

I have 3 children, 8, 5 and 3yo. 8yo DS is from a previous relationship and I'm well aware that he faces more problems than my other two. Just wondering what the arrangement people consider the best?

Could ds2 invite a friend over for sleepover/playdate so he is not feeling quite so alone? Might also be worth planning a special night for him and db when he is backif ds2 behaves while db is away so that it becomes more normal?

He has got Ds3 for company - but prefers Ds1!
