Lawn Bowls - could it be for you?

What’s your impression of Lawn Bowls as a sport?
My DH is Club Captain at a competitive club in central south, but they’re having increasing problems recruiting new players to the game.
We understand the social changes affecting this - younger people working further away, grandparents caught up with looking after children and so on.
It is a highly skilled game, far removed from the idea of pensioners clinking bowls together. You would need circa £500 for bowls and club uniform to start, but it’s cheap thereafter.
But would you consider playing?

I find it incredibly boring. I have relatives who play for my country and many members of my family have played but it isn’t for me. I just find it tedious. I find sports generally boring though but this especially so. Plus all that bending up and down would kill my damaged back.

Im glad that it exists for others to enjoy but I can’t imagine ever taking it up.

I’ve purposely provided information about what the game entails for those that might be interested, even academically.
Some people tread lightly through life. I suspect you’re wearing very heavy boots, squashing all before you. Leave others be if you have no interest, certainly a game of lawn bowls doesn’t need your damnation.

Ok I’m not sure who you meant to reply to there (you replied to yourself), but nobody here has been rude about lawn bowls and certainly nobody has shown “damnation” towards it.

I’m not going to bother posting again here, but I would genuinely consider whether your tone and style of communication might be putting some people off joining.

I don’t think anyone, apart from you OP, has squashed all before.

People are ‘leaving others be’ if they have no interest. That’s the point of your post. You wanted to try and find out why people weren’t getting involved in lawn bowls.

I told you about my experiences of bowls in Australia where it is very popular which you did not acknowledge even though I posted about it twice.

I told you that I found the very high hedge at my local lawn bowls club, which I can see from my house, off putting.

Instead of saying ‘oh that’s interesting, maybe we could leave the gate open when we are playing so people passing by could see in’ or ‘perhaps we could get a sandwich board for outside the club to make it clear that we are looking for new members and are welcoming’ you lectured me about how it wasn’t a ball sport. I didn’t read it.

I agree that looking at your communication style may be a good idea.
