Anyone staying up for the Pride World Cup match tonight?

Annoyingly, it's kicking off at 4am, but the match will feature lots of rainbow flags and there will even be drag performances.

It should be a lot of fun!

Oh, the two teams are Egypt and Iran, both of which have the death penalty for homosexuality.

Why pick that match then ?

ShetlandishMum · 26/06/2026 17:23

No.

I am following world cup enthusiastically and have never heard of it

hay5689 · 26/06/2026 17:26

Sounds absolutely ridiculous.

SilenceInside · 26/06/2026 17:30

It sounds like it’s nothing to do with the actual football match, given that it’s not been organised by FIFA and both teams taking part objected to the concept.

No. I don’t think a cult should sponsor a football match, let alone a misogynistic cult

nocoolnamesleft · 26/06/2026 17:35

Which version of Pride? Because Iran is very heavily into transing the gay away.

FrootyCider · 26/06/2026 17:55

Well, when the world cup was in Qatar everyone was told to respect the culture - women to cover up, LGBT+ people to hide who they are, rainbow flags and arm bands were banned.

A pride parade has been held on this date in Seattle for 50 years and this was planned before the draw.

Guess they'll just have to respect the culture 🤷🏼
I think it sounds like a lovely weekend and I'm always happy to see some flags during Pride month. Sadly much fewer around me this year. (Though i skip past performances at football full stop, this isn't the Superbowl!)

Nope.

MrsTomRipley · 26/06/2026 18:10

Egypt does not have the death penalty for homosexuality.
HTH

Oh yes, it's just 17 years in jail.
