Am I a sell out for supporting England in football? - Debate with flat mate

My mate is calling me a sell out for supporting England.

I was born and raised in London mostly till age 13. (Had a bit of childhood from age 2-4/5 in Nigeria)

I spent time in Nigeria from age 13 -21 then came back to London at age 21. I have been living in London ever since.

I have Nigerian ancestry through both of my parents.

Just a bit of a background story into my life!

Told him he is wrong, and have every the right to support both England and Nigeria and not have it questioned since I have dual heritage of both nations

I think you don’t need to explain yourself to him and just support the team you want to support.
I’m Scottish but prefer watching English football, no big deal and I’d ignore anyone who questioned it.

DinaofCloud9 · 07/01/2024 21:43

You are completely free to support whoever you like.

SkaneTos · 07/01/2024 21:44

You and only you decide what team/teams you want to support.

Dacadactyl · 07/01/2024 21:45

Your flatmate sounds bonkers!

I also support 2 countries and I've never even lived in the other country (my mum's home nation)

Dami090496 · 07/01/2024 21:48

@Dacadactyl , 100 percent. People connect to supporting national teams in different ways, whether its the players they like, the kits or the players having the same passports!

Dacadactyl · 07/01/2024 21:52

@Dami090496 was he just ribbing you and that got you wondering about it? Or was he being mean with it?

I've had people from my mums home nation not understand how/why I support their team either, but I think it's cos they've not had that dual experience of "feeling" as though they're also connected to another place on some deeper level.

Deathbyathousandcats · 07/01/2024 21:54

Tell him to mind his own business?

LadyJelly · 07/01/2024 21:55

So only white people with English heritage can support England? Fuck that!

Dami090496 · 07/01/2024 21:58

@Dacadactyl

I think he can't accept the fact that people got dual heritages/dual nationalities so they connect with different teams in different ways.

Yeah just got to ignore it, he's not in my life experiences to be able to understand how I feel 😂

shoesday · 07/01/2024 21:59

You support whoever the fuck you want to. Who does your flatmate think they are!

Dami090496 · 08/01/2024 09:44

@LadyJelly

Hes of this stupid view that non-white people born in England can't be English 😂

WalkingThroughTreacle · 08/01/2024 10:07

I'm a Scot and actively support the England Women's team. Only real interest I have in football tbh. If anyone judges me for it I really couldn't care less. Support whoever you want.

"Hes of this stupid view that non-white people born in England can't be English"

What a load of toxic racist nonsense. Unfortunately, you can't argue with blind ignorance.

DownNative · 10/01/2024 15:42

I support Northern Ireland, England and Portugal in international football.

Northern Ireland - I'm from there.

England - a parent is from there plus they're the best team in the British Isles as a whole.

Portugal - because of Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes.

Also a Man U fan so the Portuguese link as well as Northern Ireland link is there in the club's history.

Of course, you can support England AND Nigeria if you wish! Nobody else's business and you're definitely not a sellout.

Mumofacertainage · 20/01/2025 09:07

Ridiculous fool. I have dual heritage and families that I love and identify with in two countries. In sport I cheer for both why on earth not? Why should I deny one side? I am legally a citizen of both. The man needs educating

DappledThings · 20/01/2025 09:09

How many threads are you going to ask about this pointless shit?

Yes you can support England, yes you can support Chelsea, yes you can call yourself a Londoner even though you've lived between Paddington and Croydon and all the other pointless questions about this you keep asking.

Yes, you’ve started dozens of these threads asking exactly the same thing, OP. You’re told the same thing every single time. Why?

I knew who it was going to be from the thread title alone. So tedious.

Enjoy the games next weekend, OP. You were born in England, you spent a good part of your childhood here, seems reasonable to me.

Unlike 99% of Manchester United supporters who never were born anywhere near Manchester or spent any schooling there.
