Anyone watching? I know team GB not doing brilliantly yet.

Michael Johnson has got a touch of the Idris Elba but silver fox I thought…

Me! Watching intermittently. And yes, copping an appreciative eyeful of MJ. What a legend. 😍

MrsPatrickDempsey · 23/08/2023 12:47

I am really enjoying it. KJT was amazing.

englishmummyinwales · 23/08/2023 12:51

I missed the first couple of days but am very much enjoying it. The BBC have a strong team of pundits, all knowledgeable and relaxed, it’s a good combination. Looking forward to Matt Hudson-Smith’s final later.

Very annoyed that I missed the mixed relays - think it’s a great addition. I am usually on top of the dates for big competitions but have been distracted by life this summer.

Hellohah · 23/08/2023 12:57

@englishmummyinwales you missed all the drama on the day of the mixed relays. 2 falls near the finish line by 2 Dutch women (not both in the mixed relays).

Really felt for them both. And the 2 men that pulled up in the 400m yesterday's with hamstrings (?)

Sport is so tough.

I did appreciate that a runner in one of the longer distances finished about 30 seconds behind the rest and he got such a cheer from the crowd when he crossed the line. That warmed my cockles.

tinytemper66 · 23/08/2023 13:07

I have just discovered I have Covid so spent the morning languishing in bed watching the heats and the field events. Looking forward to tonight's action.

Thelonelygiraffe · 23/08/2023 13:19

Team GB not doing brilliantly??

We only have one field athlete progressing through the heats so far, which is poor, but on track we're doing pretty well. We're fourth on the medal table!

We have chances at medals in the 200m M and W, and the M 1500m tonight. And we had three women competing in the 1500m final last night - that's never been done before!

Maybe it’s just me that’s noticing their progress as a team?

I really felt especially for Laura Muir last night, she ran a great race. Dina Asher-Smith raced much better this morning.

Hurdles and running were the only sports I was good at at school. DF (dad) was a teenage London champion in 50s/60s (White City) he had medals in running and hurdling.

Well the 1500m was very exciting! Could you hear me screaming at Josh Kerr?!

Biscuitandacuppa · 23/08/2023 20:31

It was a fantastic race!

littlbrowndog · 23/08/2023 20:32

Josh Kerr ❤️❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏

littlbrowndog · 23/08/2023 20:35

Laura 😥

TheMadGardener · 23/08/2023 21:39

Josh Kerr was great.

I really feel, as one of the commentators said tonight, that British Athletics need to do a massive push or put some serious funding into field events. We've had great field eventers in the past but not now. Where are the high jumpers/long jumpers/triple jumpers/discus and javelin throwers etc? Decent showing in the women's pole vault but not in the men's. We have great heptathletes but we haven't had a decent decathlete for donkey's years. Daley Thompson used to rule the world! We are really, really absent from most of the field events.

Ingebrigtsen looked like he was sucking a lemon while all the other athletes were congratulating each other tonight. I also enjoyed the sour look on the face of the USA javelin thrower yesterday who got beaten by her supposedly lesser USA teammate. Couldn't bring herself to say well done!

Really looking forward to the men's 400m final. Should be epic. Also to the decathlon on Fri/Sat even though no British interest so it doesn't usually get enough coverage on the BBC.

This is what I think. There needs to be way more funding in British Athletics. Dina Asher-Smith to me looked jaded and tired. If she were American she’d have the best training etc but we just don’t invest.

I actually knew of a female high jumper personally back in the late 80s as my then colleague and friend raced and hurdled with her sisters at the local athletics track/club. Another neighbour who’s slightly older trained at Tooting Bec track in running.

Josh Kerr though?! Full of confidence and he knew exactly what he had to do to win. Well done to him!

Loads of athletes have lost lottery funding in the past few years. And others have been told they can't have it until they reach a certain level, which they can't do without funding so it's a vicious circle. Can't get funding for coaches, or can't get funding to train full-time or go to warm weather training or take coaches with them.

Some of the ones doing well have gone to train in the USA, like Josh Kerr, or gone through the US collegiate system.

They need to get into schools and make field events a priority there too. And give kids more opportunities to try athletic events.

I grew up in Cornwall and it's hopeless for kids with ability in the far SW or other rural regions, to get to decent training facilities involves going elsewhere. There are a few exceptions like Molly Caudery but mostly kids who get into athletics seriously are going to be in places with opportunity and facilities like London or Sheffield or Edinburgh.

A long time ago I taught a boy who later got into athletics at secondary and he eventually won a Commonwealth medal (4x4 relay) but then got injured and gave up.

HalleLouja · 23/08/2023 23:04

Omg I screamed at the tv when Josh Kerr overtook JI. It’s amazing that both him and Jake are from the same club.

With regards to field - it seems like a long time ago we had great athletes. When I grew up in the 80’s and 90’s there were lots. Even 2012 we had at least two medals in field.

I have volunteered at the World Athletics before and wish I was there but lots of drama to watch.

imed · 25/08/2023 20:41

Why is Gabby Logan wearing a doily tonight?

ZeroFucksGivenToday · 25/08/2023 20:49

Anna Purchase (hammer thrower) is from Notts but went through the USA collegiate system. She's still out there now she's finished and training with Camryn Rodger's. I'm keeping everything hugely crossed for her going forward. She was buzzing to make the final.

BethnalGreenBambinos · 26/08/2023 19:39

Bronze for Ben Pattison - fantastic!!

DisforDarkChocolate · 26/08/2023 19:42

MJ is my not so secret crush. I loved him as an athlete, love him even more now.

ignoreignoreignore · 26/08/2023 19:42

Is it a coincidence all the female presenters are wearing green this evening?

I think similar. He’s just such a nice person, very genuine, funny too. Seeing him cheer on the Scottish English gold medal winner the other day cemented him as my crush in my mind!

They were all wearing yellow earlier. I am sure that was today..
