F1 2022 Discussion Thread

GrandSlamFinale · 22/05/2022 10:52

After many weeks and months of waiting, we finally have an F1 discussion thread on MN!

Anyone who wants to join is welcome - regardless of how long you've been watching the sport or who you support. My only request is that we keep it respectful even when criticising our favourite driver's rivals.

We're in Barcelona this weekend for round 6 of what has been a thriller of a championship so far. I'm really excited to see how the race unfolds today, if overtaking will prove as difficult as it historically has here, if the Mercs have done a step forward in race pace, how RB and Ferrari will play around with strategy and tyres.

Anyone else want to just scream at the television while listening to Christian Horner! All I keep thinking in my head was but the other 9 teams managed not to go over budget! The whole thing just annoys me. No one is saying what the actual figure is. Then for Horner to say that they shouldn't be accused of cheating as though Red bull have never accused any teams of cheating 🙄

For the first time in many many years I have not watched any of this weekend's practice nor will I be watching the race itself.

I dislike Horner intensely and this has made me dislike him even more, if that is possible. Dislike Verstappen too. Toxic team that are going to be allowed to get away with cheating. Makes me sick.

I am torn between wanting Lewis to carry on racing for a couple of years and get another championship or to walk away for what is now, it seems, a corrupt sport. If he were to walk away I probably would stop watching F1

Rowgtfc72 · 22/10/2022 19:54

@mydogisthebest I've had the same conversations with people at work. Maybe now is the time for Lewis to get out. Not a Lewis fan in the slightest but Red Bull, Verstappen and particularly Christian Horner just give me the rage.
Would be the FIA s fault if Mercedes, Ferrari and Mclaren took their teams and money elsewhere.

dublino · 22/10/2022 19:57

The absolute tripe Horner was saying at the press conference. He has some neck on him

Tilda77 · 22/10/2022 22:55

I don't expect there will be anything resolved in the coming days/ weeks seen as they've just announced Dietrich Mateschitz has passed away.

LookItsMeAgain · 23/10/2022 15:06

It is sad that Dietrich Mateschitz has passed away.

I can't get past the idea though that 9 of the other teams (including the sister team to RBR) all managed to say under the budget cap financially. Even the fault that was found at Aston Martin wasn't a financial one. I think it was a procedural one.
How can they say that they didn't break the budget cap when they did?

If they hadn't broken the budget cap, the FIA and any other organisation involved in Formula 1 wouldn't be investigating them, wouldn't be having discussions with them behind closed doors to come up with a suitable punishment/reprimand because there wouldn't be anything to punish or reprimand. Follow the train of thought here - you don't punish teams if they haven't broken the rules.

I think RBR need to get a new Team Principal in place for the 2023 season. Under Horner's guidance they have been found to have broken the rules. They need a change at the top.

Princessglittery · 23/10/2022 16:26

I agree it is a real shame Dietrich Mateschitz has died. He always seemed much quieter and clearly loved sport given the diverse investments in so many sports. Mark Webber in his autobiography had a good relationship with Dietrich and the break down was partly due to Helmut and Christian and their favouritism for Seb.

Like @dublino I couldn’t believe the rubbish Christian was coming out with, implying they should get away with it because workers children being bullied in the playground. Obviously no one should be bullied over this but Christian isn’t helping them.

I thought it was interesting that Jost Capito said Williams fine for a technical breach earlier this year was because one of their suppliers was late in filing their part of the submission.

I think many teams are sending the FIA a clear message that if Red Bull don’t get a decent sporting penalty they will be looking to exceed the cost cap as a fine makes it worth it. I like Zac Brown as he is very robust in his responses and has been very careful to set out McLaren’s position on penalties for any team caught cheating.

dublino · 23/10/2022 19:46

¡vamos sainz! Who do we fancy . Would love to see carlos win his second but heads saying it's gonna be verstappen as always

LemonRedwood · 23/10/2022 20:25

I think Russell was a bit fortunate to only be given a 5s penalty there.

DH and I were laughing at Martin Brundle's grid walk where once again many 'celebrities' don't seem to realise who he is (side-eyeing you, Brad Pitt, even more shameful as you want to make a film about F1!) and it led us into a discussion about why there are 2 races in the USA when they don't have any drivers (answer is money, obviously) and then down a Google rabbit hole of history of F1 in the USA and drivers from the States...

Does anyone know which year and at which track a driver from the USA last had a victory? And can anyone name the only USA champion (bonus point for the year)?

I'm now ready if any of these things randomly come up in a pub quiz!

Princessglittery · 23/10/2022 20:50

Mario Andretti was WDC

Princessglittery · 23/10/2022 20:55

I laugh too about how many “celebrities” show themselves up when MB tries to interview them. You can tell the real F1 fans as they know who he is.

LemonRedwood · 23/10/2022 20:59

Princessglittery · 23/10/2022 20:50

Mario Andretti was WDC

Correct 😊

And I should have said two because it turns out my reading comprehension is shocking 🤦🏻‍♀️ There's one more

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 23/10/2022 21:14

Phil Hill in ‘61

LemonRedwood · 23/10/2022 21:22

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 23/10/2022 21:14

Phil Hill in ‘61

Also correct 😊✅

ChecoPerez · 23/10/2022 21:51

Oh Hamilton, please stop! He's starting to sound like a rattle tale with every single thing Max is doing. Ironically he's got the black and white flag for track limits too.

He needs to focus more on his driving and track limits opposed to moaning about every single move Max does!

ChecoPerez · 23/10/2022 21:52

Tattle tale*

Tilda77 · 23/10/2022 21:53

I really hoped Lewis was going to get the win today....sadly not! Turned out to be a good race. Poor Carlos!

Princessglittery · 23/10/2022 21:54

When your fighting a car that has has more than the cost cap spent on developing it you use what you can.

Remember in Brazil Max was the one telling tails about the wing on Lewis’ car.

ChecoPerez · 23/10/2022 21:57

Ironically they went over the cost cap due to Lewis ramming into max... 🤷🏻‍♀️

ChecoPerez · 23/10/2022 21:58

Gutted for Carlos. He's had no luck whatsoever :(

ChecoPerez · 23/10/2022 22:06

Every time I see him, I'm always taken aback by the sheer height of him!!

LemonRedwood · 23/10/2022 22:07

ChecoPerez · 23/10/2022 21:57

Thought they'd gone with catering as the excuse?

ChecoPerez · 23/10/2022 22:09

@LemonRedwood oh god knows, it's a different excuse daily! Can't keep up 🤣 catering is a new one for me! Who will get the blame for that lol!

dublino · 23/10/2022 22:11

Wish Hamilton would pay more attention to the driving then when he taught verstappen went off track. Russellvreaking me heart . Never takes the blame

dublino · 23/10/2022 22:12

Taught the same myself. Not sure how you even have an excuse. You have a budget that covers everything....
