After many weeks and months of waiting, we finally have an F1 discussion thread on MN!

Anyone who wants to join is welcome - regardless of how long you've been watching the sport or who you support. My only request is that we keep it respectful even when criticising our favourite driver's rivals.

We're in Barcelona this weekend for round 6 of what has been a thriller of a championship so far. I'm really excited to see how the race unfolds today, if overtaking will prove as difficult as it historically has here, if the Mercs have done a step forward in race pace, how RB and Ferrari will play around with strategy and tyres.

I think that BBC article is a little one side. I'm sure I saw an interview with Alonso after the race where he said that what he said about Lewis he said in the heat of the moment. The BBC article mentions that part but Alonso said more than Andrew Benson reports. I think Alonso was reasonably apologetic - for him! - about what and how he said it.

I think it's Benson who is constantly criticised on Twitter for being very biased toward Hamilton.

Apparently Hamilton sent Alonso a signed cap after the race because he knows it will annoy him

Love this if this is true!

LemonRedwood · 01/09/2022 18:22

Good to see both have kept their sense of humour!

So. Mclaren have signed their man then!

GrandSlamFinalee · 02/09/2022 17:02

Go Oscar! So happy for him. Someone posted a list of his major titles in the last 10 years and he’s won almost everything - so impressive.

GinaTribbiani · 02/09/2022 21:19

Happy for Oscar!

Good to see Ted back!

GrandSlamFinalee · 03/09/2022 15:26

Shame about that S2 from Charles, he would’ve had pole otherwise. But great job by Max regardless.

I really hope there are no issues with flares being thrown on to the track tomorrow. They had to red flag once today because of them, and another flare was thrown just 1 min before the end of the session… luckily that didn’t cause a red flag but it could be really dangerous if it happens in the race.

mydogisthebest · 03/09/2022 19:46

The flares annoy me. Verstappen's supporters have been asked not to take them into the track and yet not only do they ignore that, they then throw them.

It's a shame that some of his fans act like football hooligans

LookItsMeAgain · 03/09/2022 20:47

I posted a comment on Facebook and I got tagged that Mercedes wouldn't be on pole because of Checo's spin. I hadn't mentioned any particular team in my post just that Max had to thank his teammate for that pole as there were others on a hot lap that couldn't complete them due to Checo's spin.

As for the flares, while I am pleased that the person got evicted, there were many, many others that weren't and that had set off flares in the stands. They should bring in some form of system similar to whatever is used for buying tickets for football matches where there was violence in the past and people have been banned from buying tickets and not allowed admittance. They are going to have to be firm on this and start now.

Flares (the ones we're talking about here, not the type that come in denim etc.) weren't a thing at an F1 race until Max showed up. I don't remember watching any race in the past where they were so prevalent as they have become now.

GrandSlamFinalee · 03/09/2022 20:56

That’s simply not true. The Mercs weren’t taking that pole off Max, they were way down by the time they got to the last corner (where the yellow flags were out for Checo).

If you look at the mini-sectors or the telemetry analysis that came out afterwards it’s very clear that Max’s lap time was not in danger at that point. Both Ferraris had completed their laps and the Mercs weren’t going to snatch it, regardless of what the UK broadcast was saying.

They might have been 1/2 spots higher though and I do think that something ought to be done when you cause a crash that compromises other people’s laps. It happens too often and other racing series have rules against it - eg you lose your fastest laps of the session.

GrouchyKiwi · 03/09/2022 21:53

I agree that Max's pole was safe. Lewis might have kept 3rd, though, which would have been nice!

Race is going to be interesting tomorrow, with Mercedes in the mix again.

I think they should check bags and confiscate all flares. They shouldn't be allowed.

NandoLorris · 04/09/2022 17:18

Helmut Marko's latest plan, just reported by Chris Medland on Twitter:
'Helmut Marko just told me an agreement has already been reached with all parties for Colton Herta to join IF he is granted a Super Licence by the FIA, and he expects a decision by Monza'
Apparently RB will only release Gasly to Alpine if they can get someone exciting to replace him...

NandoLorris · 04/09/2022 17:19

Also, wasn't Zandvoort a good race! Lots of twists and turns. Was disappointed by Mercedes strategy at the end, they got that wrong.

Tilda77 · 04/09/2022 17:31

Was so disappointed for Mercedes and especially Lewis. Just when it looked like Max wasn't going to have it all his own way....it went in his favour.....as usual!

Mosso · 04/09/2022 17:35

Conspiracy theorists are going mad on Twitter.

LemonRedwood · 04/09/2022 17:56

So pleased that there was no orange smoke during the race.

Don't really understand why Mercedes put mediums back on at Hamilton's last pit stop - wouldn't softs have made more sense?

It was an exciting race thought. Honestly don't know what is wrong with Ferrari. It's almost like they have someone on the inside deliberately sabotaging them what with that utter shambles of a pit stop for Sainz.

I said that a few weeks ago. They've got someone on a massive bung to fuck it up for them.

Rowgtfc72 · 04/09/2022 18:30

Just imagine the points Ferrari would have by now if they'd not made all those errors this season. Never been a Ferrari fan but do rate Leclerc as a good driver.
He must be so frustrated.

burblish · 08/09/2022 10:58

The Mercedes and Ferrari teams have made some utterly bizarre decisions this season. And how is it that every single time there is a safety car (virtual or otherwise), bloody Verstappen benefits from it?! I (very!) grudgingly admit to his talent in his own right, but he really does seem to get the lucky breaks going his way most of the time too.

Have to agree about the decisions of Ferrari and Mercedes. Also, yes, it does seem Verstappen benefits from safety cars so much.

I think it would be better if no pit stops were allowed when there is a safety car.

LookItsMeAgain · 08/09/2022 12:42

The latest bizarre Ferrari decision is to drive in YELLOW at the Monza GP this weekend!

I think redbull just have a far better strategy team!

MadameMinimes · 08/09/2022 16:58

Ferrari strategy has been poor but the Mercedes’ strategy would have been a stroke of genius if there hadn’t been a safety car. Lewis might not have won, but he would have been in serious contention for the win in a significantly slower car. They were making the best use of the fact that their package is easier on the tyres. On this occasion they were unlucky, but that’s the sport.

Tilda77 · 08/09/2022 17:45

Mercedes were unfortunate at the start of the season with the porpoising issues and Max was able to turn that into a huge advantage. Ferrari had the ability to challenge the red bulls but their strategists repeatedly let them down. Red bull looks like they are going to win on merit this year but next year looks like it will be very competitive. With the red bulls doing their thing, Mercedes hopefully getting back to winning ways and Ferrari hopefully sorting themselves out! Mercedes should feel quite pleased with themselves as their only DNFs were driver error. The car doesn't seem to have any mechanical failures...unlike their competitors. I just wished that someone would have been able to give red bull some competition this season but Max has been able to make the others look average. He will have to have a very bad run of luck not to be the champion in 2022

LookItsMeAgain · 10/09/2022 15:25

Alex Albon will not be taking part in the Monza GP this weekend. He has been diagnosed with appendicitis. Nyck De Vries will be driving in his car this weekend.

He's actually managed to get his car out of Q3 and in to Q2 where Latifi hasn't.

Williams really will have to ditch Latifi, even though he comes across as a decent person, he's just not getting the results they need. De Vries would be a great addition to their team.

Unfortunately, I have to go out so I actually won't see who manages to get pole position for tomorrows race but I will watch it on catch-up later on.
