A few off the top of my head:

  • Keely Hodgkinson breaking the British record and winning a Silver medal in the 800 metres today.
  • Emily Campbell winning Silver in the women's 87+kg weightlifting, as well as the Gold medal winner Li Wenwen, who was so tenacious in chasing her dream.
  • Hidilyn Diaz winning the Philippines' first ever medal at the Olympics, and making it a Gold in the weightlifting.
  • Lisa Carrington winning Gold in the K-1 200m for the third Olympics in a row, then winning another Gold in the doubles 500m a few hours later with Caitlin Regal.
  • Helen Glover and Polly Swann coming 4th in the Women's Pairs final.
  • Emma Twigg's amazing performance to take single sculls Gold.
  • Yulimar Rojas setting a new world record in the Triple Jump.
  • Charlotte Worthington and Bethany Shriever being absolutely brilliant in the BMX, winning Gold despite having no funding from British Cycling.

Please add more.

@ChateauMargaux

GB sent more women this year then men!! Good for them. There are so many reasons to cheer these olympics for equality for women!!
Its been a fantastic Olympics for all the athletes involved regardless of gender.

They are more women at the Olympics across the board as there are more female only events. Rhythmic gymnastics, synchronised swimming & softball are all female only. GB also didn't support a men's football team either. I think there was only baseball which was male only.

I’ve loved seeing the various women who have had babies and then returned to amazing-ness in their sport. There seem to be quite a few. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Faith Kipyegon, Laura Kenny, Allyson Felix are a few of them.

I view her as a girl at 13 but gutsy Skye Brown who overcame horrific injuries & competed in the skateboarding with style. The camaraderie between all those girls was lovely to see.

Very brave of Simone Biles to step down, speak out about mental health & then go back for the beam final.

Laura Collett who suffered a coma and blindness in one eye but helped the equestrian team to success.

Beth Shriever BMX gold medallist who crowd-funded to get to the Olympics & also overcame serious injury.

All the athletes are dedicated & inspiring.

Good thread!

So many amazing women!

The BMX women didn't get funding from the sports council or whatever they're called. Had to raise money. The men I think did.

That's shitty.

Great thread thanks OP Smile

Are you sure about that? I thought both men and women freestyle bmx riders were brought into the British Cycling programme at the same time in Apr 2018? I might be wrong but I thought that was the case.

'She has benefited from British Cycling identifying BMX and mountain biking as new avenues for success, as their long-standing dominance in the velodrome comes under threat.

UK Sport had initially denied funding to the men’s mountain bike and women’s BMX for this cycle.

When British Cycling performance director Stephen Park successfully lobbied for a reallocation to BMX, it was envisaged that medals may flow in the 2024 Paris Olympics. But Great Britain have immediately taken gold medals in three of the new cycling disciplines, with four medals in BMX. '

I don't know when the funding was reallocated or if full amount though.

Yeah I mentioned Allyson earlier up :) I was so pleased for her receiving bronze yesterday! Her and Shelly Anne have both had children, and from what Michael Johnson was saying yesterday, Allyson had a far from easy labour (not that any labour is easy!!!) I’m in so much awe of these women balancing their training and professional sports careers with their children and still being amongst the best in their field. ❤️❤️

All the gymnastics team and especially the Gadirova twins for being so positive and wonderful in their interviews.
