Who of any good at penalties?

VerticalHorizon · 11/07/2021 17:25

To be fair. Villa aren't England, and Villa aren't playing Italy.

There's an argument to use Grealish early on, and hit them hard, quickly, with pace... and if we get a decent lead, to shore things up and possibly take him off then.

Conversely, we can save him until their legs are tired, and hit them hard then... when he might have even greater impact (and we might also need him in extra time).

This is true quite a few players (Foden, Sterling, Mount, Walker) - players with pace that are highly likely to trouble tired legs.

I don't envy Southgate. It's not an easy decision to make, but I personally think we have a fairly decent formula, and it makes more sense to save Grealish and Foden for later.

I think it's an emotional lottery. Nerves are the biggest factor I think. It's very unpredictable, and they might not decide until the very moment it happens.

nottoday3000 · 11/07/2021 17:28

Are you all watching on bbc1 or ITV?

the80sweregreat · 11/07/2021 17:30

BBC as I loath the constant ads or Ian Wright's face if they lose!

VerticalHorizon · 11/07/2021 17:30

BBC I think

the80sweregreat · 11/07/2021 17:34

I don't like Gary Lineker much , but I'll stick with the beeb.

Runningupthecurtains · 11/07/2021 17:37

No Italian win at Wimbledon today - let's hope it doesn't fire them up.

Italy did well in their penalty shoot out, although one of Spain’s missed got skied. Jordan Pickford is a decent shot stopper, so we would have a shout in terms of our goalie. Their team is more experienced and may handle the nerves better, but who knows. If it goes to pens it’s anyone’s game. I hope it doesn’t, my nerves couldn’t take it!

Fair point it’s a different side - but even based on the games this tournament, I think though if our aim is to keep the ball, Grealish offers a lot there. He is very difficult to dispossess without fouling, moreso than Saka or foden, and that is useful over the 90, in my opinion. If we are playing with a bit of caution, the set pieces he will win us would be very useful. I think though the fact we are having this conversation shows how much depth we have going forwards, which is great!
VerticalHorizon · 11/07/2021 17:42

Not sure he's definitely out. We'll soon find out.

For every match I've been at work.

Sunday just happens to be my day off.

Do I wear my work uniform later, on my day off? 🤔

DuncinToffee · 11/07/2021 17:54

Why indeed, it was utterly predictable that this was going to happen

Why do they have to do this? climb on stuff, chant with their arms pointing aggressively... 'conquer' a damn bus. It's cringeworthy, it really is.

I feel like a total spoilsport, but honestly, they look a right set of arses.
