Bike T minus 35 days and counting, to the Grand Depart from Leeds 5th July, with two stages in the White County, and then a third from Cambridge to the Mall in London. It's just soo exciting! It's the biggest biking event in the world, with approx 190 professional riders in about 20 teams racing across tarmac and cobbles, up mountains and down Dales and ending on 27th July on the Champs Elysee, Paris in the now traditional sprint finish there. So here's the thread to share in it all, swop info about accommodation for Tour watchers, road closures, the parcours (courses), peloton gossip, potential meet ups, tv coverage, who's got the nicest legs etc.. and everything to do with the thrills and occasional spills with the event that is a game of poker played out every day on 380 wheels. OF course if you are a newbie to all of this and are curious about the whys and hows of racing then ask and someone will pop up to answer questions. Hopefully.

So I'll depart here next with the routes of the UK 3 stages being taken so no-one gets lost and ends up in the dreaded broom wagon. Bike

Quintana is only doing the Giro & the Vuelta, Movistar decided to go with Valverde in the Tour

canutesauntie · 09/07/2014 15:08

Sorry post

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 09/07/2014 15:09

Horrible conditions out there today. I am slightly surprised that the peloton haven't neutralised the stage, the same way they did during the Giro this year, when the roads were so wet and slippery.

Poor Chris - he must be devastated.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 09/07/2014 15:11

They now appear to be riding down a mud track. Never mind cobblestones, it's horrible!

By the end of the stage it's going to be hard to tell who is in which team as they'll all be completely spattered.

canutesauntie · 09/07/2014 15:16

You wouldn't normally risk a bike as expensive as those on that track! I don't think they'll neutralise as I don't think there anyone to make that call yet in the race and today is too much of an opportunity for GC contenders if they're brave enough to gamble.

Bolshybookworm · 09/07/2014 15:16

Lurking but now joining in as I'm desperate to talk about the tour (I'm on mat leave, so missing my fellow cycling fans at work). Quintana just won the Giro so it would be a big ask to expect him to try for both! Would have loved to have seen him in yorkshire though, he's amazing. Sad that Froomes out, mainly because I was looking forward to some epic mountain battles with contador and Nibali.

ariadneoliver · 09/07/2014 15:21

I agree canute Nibali is nearly a minute ahead of Contador, there's no way there'll be an agreement to neutralise.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 09/07/2014 15:21

I almost can't watch this. Just seen a Lotto rider take a back-flip over a spectator.

It's going to be last one standing at this rate.

SeaShellsMyDogTrulySmells · 09/07/2014 15:28

Looks absolutely lethal out there :( missed Froome out as on school run.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 09/07/2014 15:37

I am watching a bit behind time - I decided to finish cooking the shepherd's pie for supper instead of watching from the start. I know - my priorities are all wrong. Blush

They are falling all over the place - I've just seen Haussler go down twice in quick succession. And DuMoulin is out of the tete du peloton too.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 09/07/2014 15:38

Btw - I am watching at 29k - how far behind am I?

Bolshybookworm · 09/07/2014 15:38

Utter carnage out there.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 09/07/2014 15:42

I'm watching live now - all caught up, and just in time for another section of cobbles.

Bolshybookworm · 09/07/2014 15:46

Dammit! Watching on husbands iPad using his Eurosport subscription and he must have just logged on at work so I've lost coverage. We'll be having words when he gets home! No ITV4 so will have make do with Eurosport live feed. AAAARGHHH!!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 09/07/2014 15:47

The bastard! How very dare he.

SeaShellsMyDogTrulySmells · 09/07/2014 15:53

Cheering for Spartacus for today!

Bolshybookworm · 09/07/2014 15:56

I'm going to spit in his lasagne tonight, the slacker.

SeaShellsMyDogTrulySmells · 09/07/2014 15:57

:D

EndoplasmicReticulum · 09/07/2014 16:00

Had to go and collect children - pah. So will save the end of the race for the highlights tonight.

It's often about luck as much as it is about anything else.

MirandaWest · 09/07/2014 16:15

Have been watching on itv4. They are very muddy Grin

MirandaWest · 09/07/2014 16:16

bolshybookworm I think you can watch live itv4 through the itv app in case your DH decides to log in at work ever again (if he dares)

Bolshybookworm · 09/07/2014 16:16

And the rider with the best name wins it!!

Bolshybookworm · 09/07/2014 16:18

Thanks Miranda, I tried that but it said you needed a subscription. Is it worth it just for the tour ponders

ariadneoliver · 09/07/2014 16:19

What a race! And two OPQS boys in the top 10. The cobbles have really shaken things up, literally and metaphorically.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 09/07/2014 16:21

I bet they are all, happy that's over! The state of them as they crossed the line - the polka dot jersey was black!

I noticed that the yellow, green and polka-dot jersey holders all finished in the top ten - I don't recall noticing that happening before (which could just mean I didn't notice, not that it never happens). Have other people noticed this happening before?
