Bike T minus 35 days and counting, to the Grand Depart from Leeds 5th July, with two stages in the White County, and then a third from Cambridge to the Mall in London. It's just soo exciting! It's the biggest biking event in the world, with approx 190 professional riders in about 20 teams racing across tarmac and cobbles, up mountains and down Dales and ending on 27th July on the Champs Elysee, Paris in the now traditional sprint finish there. So here's the thread to share in it all, swop info about accommodation for Tour watchers, road closures, the parcours (courses), peloton gossip, potential meet ups, tv coverage, who's got the nicest legs etc.. and everything to do with the thrills and occasional spills with the event that is a game of poker played out every day on 380 wheels. OF course if you are a newbie to all of this and are curious about the whys and hows of racing then ask and someone will pop up to answer questions. Hopefully.

So I'll depart here next with the routes of the UK 3 stages being taken so no-one gets lost and ends up in the dreaded broom wagon. Bike

(Terrific PR op for the PM, too)

canutesauntie · 05/07/2014 17:03

Just looked it up, Millar is 6ft 4, Boardman is 5ft 9, but Millar still looks like he's standing on a box in a languidly lovely sort of way

canutesauntie · 05/07/2014 17:06

JENS!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 05/07/2014 17:06

Languidly lovely is a perfect description of David! Though I would rather he was riding than commentating.

frostyfingers · 05/07/2014 17:19

I'm devastated at that - not sure I even want to watch any more if Cav's not in it. Looks like a collarbone to me too, and it's not like Cav not to leap up straight away too so it must have hurt like hell.

From the aerial shot it looked like the bloke in dark green (Brian somebody, who was the one they were saying earlier had a bit of a reputation and was best avoided in a finish) leaned or moved a bit towards Gerans which would have made it worse - not saying he caused it, but by doing that left Gerans no room at all. Grim day for me.

Panwearsjaune · 05/07/2014 17:30

What a day! Yorkshire folk wheely pulled it off didn't they. Enormous crowds, constant noise, beautiful beautiful scenery, and Jensie the Chief Escapado was esp fab, as tomorrow he'll be very easy to spot!

Was Cav to blame? If I was Gerrans I'd think so - Cav is so small he must have been coming onto Gerrans arm rather than his shoulder and he had nowhere to be pushed to, even if it was a legit shoulder barge.
Would love to see the support bike photos as well please!!

Hello! Just got home from Leeds city centre. Had a great view from the town hall steps!

285,000 people in the city centre watching today. It was so busy Shock

Just caught the end as we forgot to record and gutted for Cav. He does like a lean though...

DoctorTwo · 05/07/2014 17:56

IMO it was a no fault 'racing incident'. Cav was being squeezed from the right, Gerrans from his left and their handlebars locked. I watch a lot of motorcycle racing and all landings like Cav's end in broken collarbones. MotoGP riders, when in Europe, get flown overnight to Barcelona, get it pinned and ride next day. Their situation is vastly different. They'll have a painkilling injection and only race for 45-50 minutes, these idiots stay in the saddle for up to 7 hours.

He's likely out, but will be fit for the Vuelta.

Selks · 05/07/2014 18:09

Yorkshire at it's very best today Smile

Looking forward to tomorrow's stage as it goes through my town, but I will be watching it on the box as I have a dissertation to plough away at. Hope the rain holds off.

Panwearsjaune · 05/07/2014 18:35

Early word is that Cav hasn;t broken anything and will prob be out for Stage 2.

Brilliant news, Pan - fingers crossed that it is right. A Cav-less Tour would be a travesty.

Panwearsjaune · 05/07/2014 18:36

by out I mean "out on his bike", not "out of Stage 2".

pan that's good.

MirandaWest · 05/07/2014 18:41

Oh I hope that's true. He'll be feeling very battered though whatever.

frostyfingers · 05/07/2014 18:59

Oh god I hope so - been mooching around the garden sulking for the last hour! They're made of strong stuff these cyclists.

Panwearsjaune · 05/07/2014 19:01

Now reported he has a 'separated shoulder'. I'll stop posting 5th hand tweets and wait for OPQS.

Jensie quote after today: "I said to my body, are you in? Let's be stupid, let's be spectacular, let's put on a show!"

What's a separated shoulder?! Sounds painful.

Obligatory photo from Leeds town hall steps earlier. Also Cav's S-Works bike and dd enjoying being the super fan she is!

It's ligament and other soft tissue damage, not broken or dislocated. Pain killers and anti-inflammatories and a sling is the treatment. #DrPan
