Why is my swimming cap not keeping my hair dry?

It's a decent make (can't remember the name) and my hair is shoulder length and quite fine.
After swimming today , a lady who was swimming at the same time as me took her hat off and her hair was bone dry.
I took mine off and it was wet! Not as wet as with no hat but still wetter than I'd like.
What am I doing wrong?
Any tips please.

I didn't know swim hats were supposed to keep your hair dry - i thought they were to keep it from getting caught up or into the pool filters. I've never had one that kept it dry.

Had the other lady been swimming properly or was she doing that head up breaststroke thing?!

Doesn't keep my hair dry, but its better than getting it soaked through. Freestyle is less wet than backstroke

T'other lady was swimming very proper front crawl! It was lovely to watch.

I'm a proper crawler too but I was also doing breast and back stroke.

Perhaps her hair just looked bone dry and was actually damp too but kind was damper because of doing back stroke.

Mine has never kept my hair even remotely dry. Maybe less than soaking at the crown / on top, but wet nonetheless. I have v long hair.

If your hair is long, be sure to make it into a high twisted pony tail bun.

Then pull your cap completely over the bun and over your ears, push all hair escapees up and have it on your forehead, and your neck.
It should make a waterproof seal around your head.
I've found this to work well. Makes you look lie an alien, but who cares?
Also, put your goggles around the bun for extra security. I use speedo split band ones, so this is easier. Squash all air out of your cap.

Or, you could ask the bone dry headed lady who was next to you how she did it?! if talking in dressing rooms is your thing that is - it's not everyone's cuppa I know!

If I see her again I'll definitely ask and in the meantime I'll follow your advise Venus and see what happens.

Modern swim caps were mean to reduce drag when racing not keeping your hair dry. I thing they used to make caps to keep your hair dry, but they are like the ones you wear in the shower and a bit frilly normally.

My Mum used to have a swimming hat with frilly flowers on it.

Maybe try one of those?

The frilly ones don't keep my hair dry at all! They spare even worse than the speedo-type ones as they don't seal round your face.

I tried the bun today. My hair was still wet, but it was a lot easier to get my hat on smoothly, and a smooth over with a towel left it damp but presentable which made getting dressed and back at my desk quicker

I'm trying it tomorrow. The bun that is, not the floral hat!
