Burst abscess type paranoia

So I had an abscess a few years ago that got progressively worse, I was told to take painkillers etc and then it ended up bursting and I got admitted to hospital for IV antibiotics and surgery, and the whole palava of dressings etc. I was very unwell and didn't really recognise it at the point of admission- I didn't even notice the nil by mouth order, even though the surgery was delayed repeatedly and I hadn't eaten in days ...

Which is context for this- so I woke up sore a few days ago, had one day of carrying on as normal, woke up sore in the night again and was still awake in time to get triaged for the gp on the second morning. Couldn't sit down, took me ages to get in and out of the taxi etc. I was prescribed antibiotics, which I've been taking and spent the day focusing on taking them properly (empty stomach etc) and warm compress. Woke up with evidence that at least some of it has ruptured, pain virtually gone. I've still some sore hot areas, so not sure it's all gone ifyswim.

Am I doing the right thing by continuing with the treatment, monitoring for temp spikes and applying sudocrem

Appreciate I sound paranoid, but I literally had so much pain in the run up to the previous hospitalisation that I'm a bit scared that it's all going to happen again

Also I know about this amazing corner of the internet because of the most amazing blackhead ear video from a few years ago. I still look it up every now and then, so satisfying. That's why I thought of you guys

Sorry, I can’t comment on the concerns about your abscess, as I would hate to give the wrong advice, but I had to comment on your reference to the ear blackhead. I wonder if it was the same video I recommended in this group once. I love that video, and I often watch it in times of need 😁.

I hope your abscess resolves soon, OP.

@HeartandSeoul the most perfect dry extraction leaving two holes? It was amazing

Just rewatched it was three holes, glorious stuff. Forgotten how satisfying the ending was! Will try to link

That was the one 😁! Nothing beats it.

It’s likely the relief is from the antibiotics doing their job and reducing the infection. Monitoring for systemic signs of infection is a good idea given your past history. If you believe it has burst, even partially, and has any open areas that are draining, I would not apply sudocrem; I would use a dry non adherent dressing to protect clothes from any liquid oozing from it and keep it clean.

If you’re worried about there being an open wound, then I would book an appointment with one of your practice nurses (ask for whoever deals with dressings at the surgery so you get someone with added experience) for them to assess it and advise on dressings or packing if appropriate.

Thank you @LovedFedAndNoonesDead, that makes sense. All seems well today, but I'll def consider contacting GP surgery on Monday to get the wound checked, I hadn't thought of that

I’m now here for the link….

paddingtoncoffee · 11/10/2025 21:47

If I've done it right ... enjoy and thank @HeartandSeoul

Wow. That was definitely satisfying, repulsively fascinating! Thanks. Sorry for your worries though, totally understandable and think getting the wound looked at is a good idea, even just for peace of mind.

What does that person do with their new ear cupboard?! It’s a cavern…

paddingtoncoffee · 12/10/2025 21:08

This has also been a thought cycle for me- do the holes just fill up with junk again? I suspect so. Are they now more likely to get infected, or less?

From my limited knowledge from watching hours of Dr Pimple Popper, I believe this area would shrink back naturally. As it was completely cleaned out, I would imagine there was a very low chance of it reoccurring (I may be wrong though!).

I’m getting an urge to watch this again now 😁

HeartandSeoul · 14/10/2025 16:30

Also to add, (and I may have remembered this incorrectly), but this isn’t considered an open wound, so no stitch would be necessary.

HeartandSeoul · 14/10/2025 22:28

Me again! It isn’t a link, but I highly recommend watching this one. It’s a little slow to get going, but well worth it 😁.
