Hello wise ones,

So, since I have come off the pill after a good 25 years, for three weeks of the month I am plagued by these big cysts under my skin on my face. What are they?!!!

they range from the size of a baked bean to a small grape. Sadly nothing in them as I have stuck a needle in very deep into several. But they are ugly and red and sore (ish) and as you can hopefully see, swollen and it’s extremely noticeable. These are on my chin but then pop up all over my face and hair line 😕

You need to go to the Doctor this is a medical thing - not a one off spot!

It’s not cyst it’s hormonal spots and sadly the only thing that will get rid of it is accutane. You can try all the creams on the market but nothing will touch it.

That looks like cystic acne.

Definitely go see the doctor. They will be able to help treat it.

I had the exact same when I hit 30, you really have my sympathy as it rocked my confidence

I went to the doctor with not a lot of hope and was prescribed duac, it’s a topical cream used for exactly this sort of acne. I didn’t hold my breath when prescribed it but oh my god it cleared everything up. Go to your doctor and ask for duac, you don’t have to suffer like this

Adapalene 0.3% and benzoyl peroxide 2.5% (I think that's their strength or other way round) is what I have prescribed, had the same as you, 2 or 3 per period. Went dermatologist and got prescription and see her every 8 months ish. Skin cleared up surprisingly. If I stop it all comes back within 2 months though. Plus specific face wash and cream and eye cream. All the best!

Are you peri-menopausal? I ask as I had hormonal acne in my early 40s and it has sadly only got better since starting on HRT, reducing alcohol almost completely and cutting back on sugar. I used to treat with salicylic and acnecide and that did help if I had big spots coming.

Adapelene from GP has sorted out similar for my daughter
