I have a toe ring on each second toe and have had no problems, til now...
I thought my left 3rd toe felt a bit tender the day before yesterday. When I had a closer look, the smell of metal coming off it was horrendous! Nothing on the ring itself, it hasn't rusted or anything. I've removed it, as it seems to have left a huge black "hole" in the side of the toe, which because of its "closed in" proximity, I haven't noticed. The skin around it was bright white, but still hidden until I parted them.
I bathed it and put antiseptic cream on it.
The next day I cleaned it again and it stunk! Can't even describe the smell! But vile.
I have nerve damage, from my hip replacement, which is why I think I haven't noticed this happening. I dry my feet well after my shower, I just don't know how this can have happened!
Tried to take a photo, but I can't because I need to hold the toes apart!
Anyone ever had anything similar? I'm frightened to death my toe might drop off! The skin from the whole top of my toe has now peeled right off.
And any tips for healing? The ring is staying off, that's for sure.

It might be that the black area is gangrene due to pressure necrosis. It sounds like that.
This is really serious and you need to see a doctor urgently ie TOMORROW . A podiatrist will give you specialist dressings to help keep the toes apart. Try and let the wound dry out - a dressing such as inadine between the toes will help .

Take the ring off the other foot. This kind of jewellery is dangerous if you have neuropathy. You also need education about footwear and checking inside shoes for anything that could rub any time you put shoes on.

I had a bit of a feeling it could be necrosis. But as it hasn't changed in the last couple of days and nothing else has developed, I wasn't 100% sure.

I rang first thing the morning after my post, and I can't get a docs appointment, even though I described my issue, until the 20th January. I have been cleansing and putting Sudocrem on it, spacing my toes with a tissue and the blackness is actually reducing in size! The skin around is drying and peeling off now. I have to say, I'm a bit relieved! It's stopped smelling and looks as if it's on the mend! Both toe rings are now off and will stay off! Thank you all for your concern. I'm keeping a close eye on it.
