This came out my DS6 ear after a long time putting olive oil drops in!

That is a thing of beauty. Congratulations. If you'd gone 'private' for cleaning you'd have been charged a good £60!

He still won't be able to hear you ask him to go to bed.

Next time you are at the GP with him for something, ask them to also quickly check his ear canal with an otoscope to see if it is misshapen.

I get a regular wax buildup in one ear but not the other, and it's because I have a sort of "step" that prevents the wax from coming out constantly over time, which is what's meant to happen. So I go every 6 months for suction treatment. If I were to wait a couple of years it would need a lot of effort to remove, and after about 5 years I would lose 80% of hearing in that ear until it's cleaned.

There's not much you can do about a misshapen ear canal, but at least DS will be able to put "regular attention to ear wax buildup" on his personal list of non-standard stuff about his body, which we all carry in our heads to the extent that we know about it.
