Wise sporners of Mumsnet...please help.

Sorry this isn't top notch sporn but this cuticle is infected and I would welcome any advice on home remedies.

Bit of pus popped out this morning but nothing since despite some prodding. Feels sore and like there is a lot of pressure.

Hot flannel, as hot as you can bear, on it. Might bring the pus out. I get these sometimes too and they hurt like a bastard.

Ihateboris · 12/08/2023 14:34

I had this a few weeks ago after having a manicure. It was unbelievably painful. I tried the hot towel etc but it kept getting worse and was warm to the touch. Ended up on a course of antibiotics.

Ihateboris · 12/08/2023 14:36

Here's a pic of mine

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 12/08/2023 14:36

Keep it really clean and covered now you've given it a squeeze. Keep an eye on it and if it gets worse or spreads you might need some antibiotics.

Blister plasters are pretty good at drawing those out if you have one handy

BebbanburgIsMine · 13/08/2023 21:27

This was mine a couple of weeks ago, it hurt like hell! I drained it with soaking cotton wool in very hot water and pressed it against my finger. The pus that came out was very satisfying!

The skin round the bit of my finger all peeled off, which was painful too, but it feels much better now.

This is the stuff dreams are made of

@ShirleyPhallus

If I get one again I promise to take more photos or videos!

mbernue · 13/08/2023 21:34

I would try tea tree oil but I don't know if you can get that for first aid in this country?

Get someone to press it to get rid of the pressure.

It's awful!

helpfulperson · 13/08/2023 21:40

Sit with it in a cup of hot water with a handful of salt until the water cooks then squeeze.

HamstersAreMyLife · 13/08/2023 21:42

My sons had a really bad one. We did salt water every day then a plaster until it started heeling. He's now got a hole in his nail though (it was really horrific and probably could have seen the GP) so that is a new horror I now need to think about!

ViscountessBridgerton · 14/08/2023 07:16

Thanks everyone I've done a few salt water soaks and it's better but not completely sorted, I'll keep going with it.

@BebbanburgIsMine OMFG that looks so painful 😖

Another old fashioned remedy I find effective is a bread poultice. I know it sounds weird if you’ve never heard of it but it really does work. I think it’s a combination of the starch in the bread and heat.

Heat a small amount of milk in a mug, add a slice of bread and mix to a paste. Apply to the area and wrap in a layer of bandage to retain the heat. Apply it quickly and cover with the bandage while still warm. Leave on for 30 mins. If you’re at home repeat 2-3 times in the day . I’ve always found it very effective in drawing out pus.

Hopefully it might settle for you without the need for antibiotics but keep an eye on it and if the redness extends along your finger you should ask the Practice Nurse to check it.

My word

AlphaAlpha · 14/08/2023 10:23

Paronychia.

If it continues to swell it may need a drain and ABx.

BebbanburgIsMine · 15/08/2023 15:30

This is my finger now, much improved!

It was extremely painful, ad while the skin was peeling but it feels much better now.

It was all from picking at a wee rag nail, I won't be doing that again!
