Infection down the side of fingernail

Hello, I've ventured down to this corner of the internet with a manky finger (pictures attached) - I hope that's ok?!

I've got an infected fingernail. Went to the GP last Thursday (I felt like a time waster going in with a sore finger but I could tell it was infected and didn't want it to get any worse). I've been taking antibiotic tablets since then, but it's still very sore and swollen and today I jabbed it with a sterilised needle to try and release the pressure and a LOT of yellow puss came out.

What should I do? I guess I need to go back and re bother the GP if it's still manky after a week? Is there anything else I can do to make sure the abscess is emptied, or should I just leave it alone?!

Ichtyol cream. Had the same thing, but to a lesser extent and the cream really helped. Smells horrendous though :(

Thank you @RandomMusings7 I'll go and ask the pharmacist.

I agree you should ask a GP about a different antibiotic. I’d also bath it in warm salt water twice a day and put magnesium sulphate paste on it twice a day with a plaster over it. Pharmacist might have different advice while you’re waiting for the GP. They’re generally very good with stuff like this.

I absolutely would NOT cut and squeeze!

no.

no I would not.

Ah come on, people! This is a classic soak in hot salt water, then rub a cocktail stick between the nail and cuticle like when you get a manicure. As you lift the cuticle the puss will all release. Just keep soaking and cleaning the edge of the nail every day.

Update - it's less sore and looks less swollen this evening. I think letting the puss out earlier has helped. Will try warm salt water tomorrow before bothering the dr again.

When I had an abscess under my arm the antibiotics seemed to help it come to a head and release the pus, unless it was a pure coincidence. So I wonder whether that's what happened in your case. It could be worth taking the steps suggested upthread to make sure all the gunk has come out.
