I've had a sore throat since last Tues, have a nasty chesty cough (PCR negative) and feel really unwell. This lump has come up in my mouth today - it's really unpleasant. What is it?

Is that on your tonsils?

Gargle with warm salty water.

FlibbertyGiblets · 04/10/2021 19:59

Phwooorrrrrrrr.
That is all.

GigantosaurusRex · 04/10/2021 19:59

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor it's not quite far back enough, it feels huge and disgusting even though it doesnt look massive. It's got a good white head on it and I'm dreading the taste if if bursts. An going to have to do salt water gargle.

I would do lots and lots of gargling and see what it's like tomorrow. Might be inclined to get it looked at properly and not just by us sporners if it's not improved.

SteveArnottsWaistcoat · 04/10/2021 22:15

Looks like your wisdom tooth is having a pus baby. I’ve one that likes to do this from time to time. You probably need a dentist!

BiLuminous · 04/10/2021 22:16

Looks like an abcess.

Lucked · 04/10/2021 22:17

I suspect a tonsil stone is trying to get out or maybe a whole little avalanche of them stuck behind one.

BBOA · 04/10/2021 22:19

Yes I’d get to a Dr. I think there is something called quinsy? Something like that where you get an abscess from a sore throat….

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 04/10/2021 22:21

If you poke it or squeeze it very gently does it hurt like a spot? I would be unable not to squeeze it very hard.

rrhuth · 04/10/2021 22:22

Yes I would keep a careful eye, do lots of gargling and maybe get a check, a quinsy can be very nasty indeed, but that looks a little further forward than a quinsy (which is usually around the tonsils). But I am no expert!!

Mykittensmittens · 04/10/2021 22:23

I think it’s quinsy, it’s in the right place plus you have the background with the throat pain. You need to see a GP urgently for that.

rrhuth · 04/10/2021 22:32

It does say to get medical advice for a suspected quinsy here: 111.wales.nhs.uk/encyclopaedia/q/article/quinsy/

and says you would get referred to ENT 'immediately' if it was one. So I think you should get it checked out.

ZealAndArdour · 04/10/2021 22:34

It looks like a blockage in the saliva duct. If you can stand to do it bite down on a citrus fruit, ideally a lime or lemon which might get the saliva flowing enough to force it out.

Not in the right place for a quinsy.

Fenelladepompom · 04/10/2021 22:35

Tracking abcess from impacted wisdom tooth?

ZealAndArdour · 04/10/2021 22:37

It’s really really NOT in the right place for a quinsy. A quinsy is a peritonsillar abscess, this lump isn’t on the tonsil.

See GP tomorrow OP, especially if you feel unwell too, could develop parotitis.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 04/10/2021 23:51

It's not in the right place for a quinsy, but I'm not a medical bod.

torthecatlady · 05/10/2021 00:05

I've had quinsy (and thought I was going to die Blush). It definitely didn't look like this when I had it. But I'm not a dr!

I'd be cautious about popping it and definitely seek medical advice as soon as you can. In the mean time, I would gargle salt water, as grim as it is.

RuggerHug · 05/10/2021 01:08

I had quinsey. It was strings of pus throughout my throat that suggested a flea circus set up through the pain. One bump isn't it but it's worth checking before you get there.

GigantosaurusRex · 05/10/2021 12:57

Thanks all. Nurse at GPs has prescribed antibiotics based on the picture but didn't know what it was. I just feel so lousy.

YellowMonday · 05/10/2021 13:19

That looks like it could be a tonsil stone to me. Lots of warm salt water gargles until it opens up. You may need a GP to lance it.

BiLuminous · 05/10/2021 15:05

A tonsil stone would be on a tonsil. The tonsils are behind the arch in the picture. This thing is around where a wisdom tooth would be and is in front of the arch.

CarrotSticks23 · 05/10/2021 15:18

It's nowhere near your tonsils. It's not in the right place for a blocked major saliva duct either

You've got a partially erupted wisdom tooth right next to it, it's probably a little abscess from that or maybe an infected mucocele. Gargle with warm salt water mouthrinses, take the antibiotics and get yourself to the dentist
