6 year old son infected toe?

Just after his bath I spotted that my son has a white 'lump' like a blister alongside his big toe. I was going to cut his nails but when I went near he kicked off. He's tired and grumpy so I tucked him in bed and told him I'll do it tomorrow.
Sorry for no pic but how do I know if it needs doctors treatment?
He says it's sore but I touched it for a bit before he realised.
His toenails are a little overgrown if I'm honest because they grow so fast and dh won't cut them Grin the hours I work mean I usually miss bedtime so I've not spotted it sooner.

While he's asleep, use a nail scissors to carefully nip a notch in the white blister. It will quietly drain on its own. Soak in salt water whenever you're able to.
Keep an eye for redness spreading away from it.

Probably an ingrown toenail which can be VERY painful. I would try soaking it. Keep an eye on it and ring doctor if it gets worse as he may need antibiotics

Is it a whitlow?

I'm going to trim the nail this morning and soak his foot whilst I'm giving him his breakfast. Plain water or salt water?

Sorry just seen someone said salt water.
Thanks all.

That looks like a lovely healthy little foot! Keep up the salty soaks! Rub gently with a towel to get any excess skin off, if he'll let you.

Thank you. He's just soaked it and I was chatting to him as I dried his foot and he let me rub it a little bit.
