DS has plug of wax in ear

DS is 10 and one of his ears is plugged with wax. I can see it sitting just as the entrance of the ear canal but it's set solid.

We've been putting oil in his ear for almost a week but it doesn't look any different. Looks like he'll need it syringed unless I can get it out without making things worse.

DB says use a Hoover attachment to suck it out

We've tried the Boots version of Otex with no joy. DS says it doesn't even fizz the way it should so seems the wax is set like concrete.

My 4yo DS had a blocked ear, oil wasn't shifting it, so I lay him across my knees and used a medicine syringe to slowly put warm water in his ear every night. After about a week there was small brown flakes and the water was a bit murky, the following night I was in my element! Out came 5 big chunks, the last of which must have been the length of his ear canal! It smelled like a cheesemongers apron, but it truly was a thing of beauty. An unparalleled moment of joy which my budding sporner embraced fully. His gleeful excitement knowing no bounds as he rushed off to find Daddy and show him his prize.
DH wretched silently, his dry heave a precursor to the immortal line "you've made him weird..."

I'd be at it with tweezers.

Please don't try DIY syringing or tweezing! The oil will have softened it nicely and your GP can use microsuction to remove if necessary. The ear hairs are very delicate and work to keep the ear clean of wax in future - dont damage them

Warm some olive oil and drop it in his ear. Failing that, go to your gp to get his ears syringed. Do not do diy syringing at home because if it goes wrong you could perforate his ear drum.

DS has had a blackhead on his nose for nearly two years and has refused to let me near him. Yesterday he was very hot and sweaty and it was sort of protuding and I managed to squeeze it out. A very satisfying waxy plug! But he said it was gross and threw it away before I could get a picture. I'm bringing him up all wrong

Obviously you don't go jetting water into anyone's lug. I used a calpol syringe for lack of a dropper, and put in a drop at a time. It took a while, as it slowly sank in through the muck, which rose to the surface. I wouldn't to anything that would potentially harm my DS.

My dad did DIY syringing on my ear when I was about 5 or 6!
I had the same problem as your DS - I couldn't hear properly out of that ear. Dr wouldn't syringe it, and just kept giving us ear drops. One Saturday morning when mum was at work, dad was giving me and my sister a bath, and while he was rinsing my hair, he just blasted the shower head in my ear and this minging, solid plug of brown shit came flying out!
Probably not the best idea to to DIY medical procedures on your kids though however, this was the late 90's, and my dad has always been a little devoid of common sense

No DIY syringing here, DS wouldn't let me even if I tried. It does seem to be resolving but I'm going to make him an appointment just to be sure all is well.

My son had one about 1cm, I carefully got it out with tweezers. He could hear much better after.

I had Dd who is 16 at the dr as both ears have hard wax. They won't consider syringing until 3-4 weeks have passed!

We've to use sodium drops and olive oil to loosen off.

I had my ears syringed by our gung Ho gp gp when I was 12. He was a bit over enthusiastic as it was solid wax and it wouldn't shift. A week later my eardrum perforated. Sorest thing ever, but the gunk gushing out was good. My earliest sporny memory!

Once upon a time, ds1 woke up with his pillow smeared with wax. He stuck his finger in his ear and what looked like a cork came out.
