Calling jimjams and anyone else who knows about BIBIC

Some of you might know that I am a salt and also have a dd with an SLI.

We are hoping she will get into a language unit in September 2006 (she'll be 5 1/2) but I'm wondering if a visit to BIBIC might be worthwhile.
I put all my work strategies into place (eg picture calenders) and we eat very carefully anyway.
Just feel I've run out of ideas and support tbh,but obviously don't want to waste my cash.

So,all you well read and well informed women out there.....what do you reckon?

Why not give them a call and have the free telephone assessment.....then they will be able to tell you whether they can be of any help.

What would you want to get out of it? If she has sensory problems then yes they would help, if not then they probably wouldn't teach you anything new.

You can fundraise for the cotst btw.

(I am probably completely wrong her,but seem to recall BIBIC being mentioned as slightly dodgy years ago by an ex bf whose job it was to bust dubious charities. As I said, I'm sure I've gor confused somewhere........)

As a salt I don't believe in miracle cures either...

Ive been involved with BIBIC for the past 3 years and never heard anything "dodgy" about them.

They raise an awful lot of cash to pay for families who cant afford the assessments and offer bursarys for low wage families.

They're not dodgy. Basically they'll give you a sensory programme. They have a SALT as well- but obviously you won't need to see her. Soon they intend to appoint a clinical psych, but I'm not sure how soon (inside info he he).

It depends what you;re after. I advised Davros not to go as I didn't think it would give her what she needed (I thought she was tooo far down the road), but otherwise I've advised everyone who's asked to go. Depends what you're after. I don't think it's much use for us now (and tbh ds1 can't handle it), but it was helpful when we went.

I don't feel there are sensory problems.....merely
(merely! ironic laugh) significant comprehension and expressive difficulties,also some socialisation issues. Hard to tease the latter out though. Some kids just aren't into other ones and my mother says i was/am just the same.

Just wonder if it will give us more than my colleagues and I can give her?
The costs aren't really an issue (I realize how lucky i am to be able to say that.)

(Just finishing 'George and Sam' by Charlotte Moore btw. What an incredibly intelligent book. Shall be recommending it to all and sundry.)

Glad they're not dodgy. Just had to put my mind at rest. There is a lot of talk on their w/site of various therapists,but with some no mention of specific training. Also case histories seem pretty patchy.

I agree with you jimjams....DH was saying last night to some friends that he feels BIBIC helped us in the early days to understand the reasons behind some of J's quirky ways....the sensory programme did help with some of his difficulties....but we both feel BIBIC has a shelf life and we wont be returning in Nov for our third assessment....however we have no plans to close the door as we appreciate that as DS grows older we will be facing new difficulties and BIBIC may be able to help.

I'm not sure they'll be able to do much for you- but do ask them.
The therapists are BIBIC trained. They're goood though. They were clued up on PECS etc so I guess they attend outside courses.

like jayzmummy I would go back if I thought we needed another bash. In the meantime we keep being mentioned in their mags as my cousins keep jumping out of planes to fundraise

TBH mizmiz - not sure they would offer you that much.

It was great for us as dd had never had any kind of general assessment and really useful to see the SALT and Physio to get tips and ideas.

But, I did feel that even with my limited reading up on things that not much of what they gave us was stuff I hadn't already heard of or thought about. For me, it was more a kick up the bum to do things rather than a lot of new knowledge IYSWIM!

I am not sure that it would be quite right for you either.

Does your dd have a statement? I assume she would need one for a place at unit. I think I would be putting my time (and possibly money) into that for the time being.

I'll talk to my contact there tomorrow. I was thinking that it might not be entirely appropriate to be honst,apart from the kick in the bum aspect. Even salts in the field of SN need this sometimes!

Situation exacerbated by the fact that I am abroad,so am dealing with this very much alone.
Rather tired as well as have a baby and am an sahm. Kids attend stuff (eg school and playgroup) when we are back in the UK but the 24/7 of it here is wearing me out a little.
Too much knowledge is perhaps a bad thing eh?

I think I'll go with the (daily) 1:1 sessions we have and preparing for the lang. unit.
