Best type of after-school childcare for kid w SEN?

Hi everybody - DS, who has a dx of ASD and is pretty high functioning, is starting school in January. I can pick him up 2 days a week, but we need some other form of after-school childcare for the remaining 3 days. I have looked at childminders, but there are very few in the area, and none of them do pick-ups from that specific school. What, in your experience, is the best option?

  1. After school clubs?
  2. Special needs childcare agency (but they are so expensive)?
  3. 'Normal' nanny agency (we get someone nice and then 'train' them)?
  4. No agency at all, just sifting through ads?
  5. I have a nice, unemployed friend, whom DS seems to like very much. Should I try to persuade him to become DS's childminder, or is that a completely crazy idea?

I'm pretty sure that your friend would have to jump through Ofsted hoops to be a childminder these days.

I expect the after-school club would be most convenient if it is at the same school? But I'd ask very detailed questions about how they would cope with your child and see how willing they are to accommodate his needs. DS was banned from the after-school club in our school (he hadn't been dxd yet and had behaviour issues).

If I had the choice of the above, I'd go for a SN agency if I could afford it - in my case I doubt I'd break even so work isn't an option for me at the moment.

Have you got a local nursery that run after school sessions?

We have a nursery up the road that will pick children up from school and take them to nursery for after school club.
