Dame Stephanie Shirley is the founder of Priors Court School (where DS goes), parent of a son with autism who sadly died some years ago and a lifelong campaigner and worker on behalf of people with ASD. She will be on Desert Island Discs on May 23rd at 11.15am. It is repeated on Friday 29th May at 9.00am and you can Listen Again via IPlayer or download as a Podcast. I may be biased, but I'm sure it will be interesting.

We went to a charity reception once and DH ended up chatting to Dame Stephanie, having NO idea who she was. he asked her if she had any connection to Autism. She was very polite and said yes, she had a son etc. No showing off or anything. He was mortified when I asked him if he knew who he'd been speaking to

No special connection but I heard the programme. I was very moved, when she spoke about her son and also when she spoke about her childhood.

I cried when she said that she was fostered but her mum wanted her back after the war but she wanted to stay with her foster parents. Just heartbreaking.

Makes me want to do more, achieve more, stop wasting time, what an amazing woman.
