ok i have just heard that we wont vbe getting a place at the speech unit i wanted taht is in west Essex as itis full according to Essex

So am back on the search for suitable place for ds .Needs be a speech unit Lea are in agreement that this best meets ds needs

They suggested Hillshot , Flanstead and Giles schools all have speech units but after googling found out these are only for Keystage 1 and there junior school equivlents do not have speech units and its widly acknoledged that ds will need ongoing help right through his education so there not suitable so dont want to have start fighting for place somewhere else in keystage 2

So does anyone know of any more units within Hertfordshire and surronding counties

thank you

So far all the units i can find have either infants or junior places and none of them are linked in anyway so ds would go somewhere for keystage 1 then have to change schools friends again again for keystage 2

like thats going help him make friendships and to socialise not

Is it speech and language only that are his difficulties? is he likely to need behavioural or learning help?

no behavoural issues and learning diffculties do all centre around his problems with understanding language or using it or his inablity to use a pen etc whixh is pd plus his obvioius pd

ty yeah found them and been googling but seems none of the speech units go right through

am going to look more into middleton and southfield even though in some ways he does not fit the mld critera but his problems will not allow him to access the national curriculm in a ms know because tried it

think hitting brick wall hurt a lot less than this

Why haven't you been told about Central Primary? Two S&L units, one "Holly", and one "Birch" - One infants and one Juniors.

Is there no room now or no room for September too? Not ideal but could you find a placement til end of school year then get him into your school of choice in Essex from the September?

oddgirl · 13/04/2010 18:47

Know Central Primary-excellent excellent speech therapist there without whom I would be lost. DS doesnt go to unit but frankly anywhere this therapist is I would go...

Will find out. Know someone left DS's class to go to another school who had speech and language issues. Will come back to you tomorrow. I think there is a good school local to us possibly Hemel Hempstead (we're in Harpenden) - not sure west herts is right side of county for you if looked at essex school? but will come back anyway.

In my experience not the most helpful lea.

You can use the fact that the LA's suggestions only cater for Stage 1 as a valid reason for rejecting them on the grounds that he will require continuity of education and that transfer to another school would be distressing.

Southfield is brilliant, I visited there just before xmas and I'm hoping to hear (any day now) that it's been named as my son's school in his statement. Mind you, I didn't see the general early years unit because I was looking at a place in the autism provision but I did see round the juniors (where the children with ASD are integrated with the rest of the intake) and it seemed really impressive.

roundthebend4 · 13/04/2010 21:17

Mines more the fact they use a lot of makaton where Middleton not so much and use sign a long

that's intresting oddgirl certainly going to give them a call maybe go visit and fact you speak so highly of theapist is good it's widly accepted ds will need a lot of help and realistcally maybe even a voca

Ironically if could get space September agreed now etc then ds could stay at Sn nursery goes pt now as not 5 till July
yes I'm I. East herts but also looking further afield as know nearest might not neccesary be best so yes please

Sorry it's not in Hemel. It is Central at Watford - which has already been mentioned.
