Ds2 went to have his eyes tested...

...and actually named three pictures for the optician! They usually rely on looking into his eyes with a light and seeing if he looks at the relief pattern in the middle of a bigger pattern. But this time the optician wanted to try some pictures and he did three out of four - apple, duck and truck. Now I know he knows these words, but he has never, ever been willing or able to demonstrate his knowledge to a stranger in a 'testing' situation.

Was really proud of him. And even more delighted that he doesn't (yet) need glasses - Dh and I are both very short-sighted, so the boys are checked yearly. I cannot imagine for a minute that Ds2 would tolerate glasses when he won't wear hats, gloves or anything long sleeved...

Strangely enough, the picture he couldn't/wouldn't name was 'fish' - probably the word out of the four he's most familiar with and the least stylised picture of the four too. The apple was literally a circle with a tiny stalk - he doesn't eat apples, we don't talk about them to him and he never really comes into contact with them.
