Special Needs children in Watford, Hertfordshire

Hello

I have been looking for a while for help and support groups in the Watford/Hertfordshire area. I wanted to find a general special and/or medical needs group to get information on education, leisure, friendship etc. I can't seem to find a group in the local Watford area?? I know of groups further out in St Albans, Hatfield etc.. but it seems a shame there seems to be a lack of support in Watford.

Further I wanted to ask how people were finding the professional help and support locally. For example I have been waiting for six months for speech therapy for my son who has been assessed and accepted onto the service but is waiting for actual help. This looks like it will not be anytime soon as he is still number 35 on the list. Has anyone else had this problem?

I have an older child with special and medical needs and would love to share experiences with other local families/mums - I have just started a group on Facebook under the title Hertfordshire children with special and or medical needs.

many thanks
Sarah

It might be worth contacting carers in herts www.carersinherts.org.uk (01442253344)as they sometimes run a parent-carers course. Mencap (01442247675) are very active in Watford, with a childrens centre and afterschool club.

Sorry realised I had only read part of your question. I live in a neighbouring health zone, and we were refused salt for ds because he was nonverbal, then when he did reach the rquired 3 word sentance level we had an 8 month wait for reassessment followed by a 6 month wait for treatment (ds was at school by then) so I am saddened to see the situation is no better.
Hope you find a suitable group. Will keep my ears open for you.
