YOUNG, AUTISTIC and PROUD

The above programme will be on Ch4, 8-9 pm on 5th April and for the following 3 weeks too. It follows 9 families who have a child on the spectrum. One not to miss I think so please spread the word.

Hi ASilv yes it does look like higher functioning more than anything. Think thats what we are dealing with, so will be interesting to me, but appreciate that others are dealing with way more difficulties and challenges than we are (as you clearly are from your list). I still want to see day-to-day stuff though! Even the more mild stuff can be difficult to explain to people who don't experience it. Like interrupted nights, night terrors, sensory probs, spending hours/money on clothes that are never worn, repeatedly dealing with rigid thinking/behaviour. And you are absolutely right, a programme showing the issues of getting diagnosis etc. would be fantastic. I am in the middle of it at the moment and struggling to know to what is going on and what to push for, shout about etc (and the time it takes! [shock}. I would love a programme to show all that. However will watch whatever is broadcast with interest.

Well, I would describe my DS as nearer the high functioning end, in that he can communicate (by this I mean he can talkhas vocab - he does struggle to socialise and cannot hold a two way, give and take conversation), has excellent memory, etc but even with his strengths his autism still affects his day to day life in so many ways that people just don't realise.

I am in the midst of pushing for medical DX and statement too, I feel your frustration and impatience. sympathetic

At the end of the day, the more programmes the better as they all help the people watching who have no direct experience of autism to gain a better understanding.

Hi ASilv Sorry obviously made slightly wrong assumption from your post! In the end we are all dealing with things that are hard to explain to others who are not facing the same issues and want people to understand. Have been posting in between dealing with DD2 has been one of the more trying days, so prob. read too quick (sorry again). She is still not asleep and I am only just eating dinner - would this be exciting TV though?! Good luck getting your DX too,
