Wish me luck for DS1's review tomorrow

Emergency review, postponed a month ago due to a lack of paperwork. Sit has collapsed dramtically at school to the extent that ds2's entire class has ahd to be segregated rom ds1 at breaktimes to ensure their safety, ds1 has also had an appt amde for referral to CAMHs for a rapidly escalating eating disorder and ds1 has been stealing to fund obsessions with raffles at teh school and attacking DH when chastised or called to account.

I did ahve a long chat with a specilaist Pstch at Uni who workd with asd kids with LD and challenging behaviour and when we plotted out his issues it became clear tehre was an almost complete lack of executive function going on- everything seems down to impulse control and disorganisation: the hitting / binge eating / obsessions / stealing and general lack of ability to self organise (which teh school has failed to carry through their promises on dealing with)- I ahve told LEA that I am prepared to postpone review if they can force school to have DS1 seen by Ed Pyswch or call in teh specilaist asd teacher who is desperate to see him but has not been called upon, so we will see.

I wrote a rather embarassing email report today for the LEA lady but truth is I can't say anyting as a certainty except that ds1 has been let down, school cannot cope and his needs are escalating. oh and thast he rpe3sents a H&S risk to the other children at the school and that whilst MS seems sutable on paper we increasingly doubt that.

Very best of luck for tomorrow Clariss. My fingers will be crossed for you

Bastard LEA cancelled.

Presumably as last time it seemed to go the way of no extra funds but now it is clear ds1 is a health and safety risk.

Postponed until two weeks into next term (two week delay set by me due to DH's exams / childcare)

Fuckit

Schools main concern (they agree about H&S) is that they can't do extra supervision with funding for HR reasons as the Head wont alow further recruitment and existing TA needs a lunchbreak.

Can't work out iof school want to leave there with no help or send him to an SNU.

sorry situation at school is still grim, and now LEA are dragging their heels. I wonder if a letter might be in order hinting at duty of care and their responsibility if a serious incident happens whilst they have delayed....

Clarissimo · 18/03/2010 15:53

I think it probably would be TC except that I asked for the meeting to now be held until DH is about, so whilst the delay from today is their call, teh extended delay is mine IYSWIM (didnt want to be dealing with ds4 and dh in uni, bad enough today trying to talk to SENCO whilst DS3 bolted afte someone, ds4 was in his buggy and ds1 wanitng to talk to me LOL)

I have explicitly stated in the letter several times that he is a H&S risk, and that he is being denied the right to develop his potential. I think theya re gearing up to saying teh anorexia / ED is a medical need not a SN one, which I suppose is aprtly right, but even so with everything else....

School admit it does seem to be a lack of executive function so needs specific work done. If he physically cannot control his impulses (bad birtth brain damage? Can't get MRI for ds3 so dont suppose I can for ds1) then social stories etc ain't gonna cut it, its supervision

oh I would still moan, as if school/LEA hadn't postponed it twice, it would be on the way to being sorted (well allowing for usual crapness).

sounds like further investigation is needed on the medical side then - hope that the people you meet on your course can advise as how to better work within your local system to actually get referrals.

magso · 18/03/2010 21:19

Sorry LEA cancelled again peachy. I agree school are failing him. It probably does not help to know that I am having similar issues with ds ( no self control/ obsessions/compulsions/lieing/stealing/binge eating/ no organisational skills etc) the difference is as he has m/sld he is in a sns where almost all the children have poor executive skills and need constant supervision and support.

daisy5678 · 18/03/2010 21:23

Oh Peachy. Grrr. They're crap.

I would use this delay to scare the shit out of them and write to them asking for formal re-assessment of SEN - IPSEA has model letters. That will make them sit up and take (a bit) of notice...hopefully, and they may then be more aware of the fact that you mean business when the review eventually happens. They can turn you down for re-assessment (and probably will) but then you can threaten Tribunal and I imagine they'd back down before then as they would know they'd be on to a losing case.

Phoenix4725 · 19/03/2010 05:30

Fingers crossed for next one any luck H&S will be the one thing they will take notice of sad not fact ds1 needs help but the fear of being sued

Clarissimo · 19/03/2010 09:32

GMS school has said that if we apply for a reassessment tehyc an't guatrantee their support as along wityh the supervision it would present them with 'significant HR issues'- something to do with having to rehire the TAs they amde redundant under very bad blood I would imagine, but not sure.

Kinda got us over a barrel, theyc an't see beyond the 'but it would give us HR problems'

They started pressuring us to send him on the school trip away next year, a child with a phobia of sleeping alone that leads to self harm / violence if he is expected to. They just do not have a clue.

Not sure Starlight, his TA has a ridiculously positive view of him that allows him to get away with murder in school- maybe its that? Also I suspect something about having to find him a place and TA in another class but I am cynical (I have learned to be).

I am happy for ds2 to go the year after though so it clearly isn't me being an over protective Mum, if it were not MArch they go then I would also happily have camped somewhere enarby, taken ds1 in the day and had him back to sleep, but March in Snowdonia- er no LOL

They couldn't take his support away from him during the reassessment process - his current Statement would stay in place until the re-assessment is done. Re: the school trip - I would like to see their risk assessment
