handed the letter i posted a few days ago to the head at pre school, she read straight away and we talked for an hour aferwards, she asked me not to withdraw ds from nursery and that we can sort things out, she adv that ds is on early years action plus, and since our meeting 2 weeks ago a member of staff has been making observations on ds re language (does she not beleive the salt report or something) so that she as something to report for the big meeting next week. I told her i have today sent in letter requesting lea for assessment for sen, she was bit taken back by this and said prob best coming from me as she still not 100% sure he needs one, i told her i visited a sn school last week and that ds would fit perfect there, she said he prob would but needs statement, anyway she said let me speak to a contact in lea who does the statements and she will speak to me later.

So went to pick up ds and spoke to head again, she spoke to lea and suddenly they can offer ds an assessment place in a sn unit within a ms school, without a statement, how great it would be, and he would get transport to school so wouldnt have to worry about that, she gave me the head teachers number and said to go view the school before the big meeting next week and see what i think, then we wouldnt have to worry abo statementing. I was drawn into this for about a hour, really excited sounded perfect until i phoned the head at the school, who asked about ds and his age, and said she hoped it didnt mind but she thinks he would be best placed at xxxxxx special school (this is the one i visited last week, i hadnt even mentioned it to her). She said they would do there best for ds but he woulnd t be with kids his agegroup as mixture between 4 - 7 year olds and that he wouldnt be able to do the stuff his ag group would be doing, she didnt think ds would benefit from her unit, and she also said she feels like a dumping ground for the lea, they send kids there when they should be statementedand sent to a provision that can best help them, she was annoyed that the lea had recommended her unit for ds as not suitable, she said i can come visit the unit though and she would take him in and they would do their best.

So was shattered by this and now i feel like the lea and head at pre- school trying to buy me off painting a rosy picture about this base al because they are trying to avoid statementing.

So although it was nice for an hour to think that ds schooling was sorted for sep and he would get the help he needed i am now back to square bloody 1 and i can see i have a bigger fight on my hands to get ds into sn school, i have decided that he defo needs to this sn school and will fight all they way.

I have no experience of this but I wanted to say I think you are a lovely mum who is doing her best for her child. Don't be side-tracked by people with other agendas.

he wouldnyt be starting there til sep. She is going o phone the ady at the lea, i gave her name to the head teacher and she knows very well, she also said that they have a good relatinship with the sn school i hav looked at and if ds did go to er unit and they fet after a short while it wasnt suitable the they would gather evidence for a statement, thats if i didnt get one this time. god dunno what to do for the best, i want ds to be with kids his owen age, which he would in the sn school but not in the unit.

so do you think i should accept the place and still go for the statementing for the sn school

I think your request fro a Statement would carry more weight if he did go to the sn unit within the ms school.

If the Head there truly believes he isn't suitable for her school then you would also have her weight behind you in the Statemnting process.

Also, by being there it already proves that he requires more than MS - which is added weight to the Statement.

The alternative would be to keep him in a nursery placement that has already proven not suitable and hope that you get a Statement - you might not.

he is in ms pre school/nursery now and then in sept due to start ms school but applying for statement for help and support for ds when he starts, i visited a sn school last week just to see if sn school suitable for ds and decided it is. so if we get a statement i would like to req the sn school.

He will be in ms pre-school/nursery for the last term before september.

we find out in our area in 3 weeks school allocations so thats were he will be starting in sep as we wont have a statement by then, but the lea have offered a place for sep without a statement in a sn base within a ms school for ds.

but the head of the sn base thinks ds more suited for the sn school we saw. so do i accept the offer the lea have made so in sep he starts in sn base in ms school whilst the statementing process is still ongoing or do i put him in ms school in sept and wait for the statement.

god im confusing myself now, lol hope this clarifys a bit

I think today, you have learned a valuable lesson. Never take at face value what the profession. say to you, and always trust your gut instinct.(If it sounds too good to be true, it is too good to be true).
The Heads of MS schools, do obviously know many contacts in the lea. But, these contacts will be "used" to pass on your intentions to, and the Head and lea will then decide a plan of action that they are happy with before getting back to you. If they sense what you want is going to cost money-and special neeeds schools do-lots, then they will offer alternatives to you.
Stand your ground, be ready for a fight, and I hope you get what you want for your ds.
