can i self refer for salt ?

Title says it all, can I refer ds2 for salt or does it have to go through gp/hv. Ds1 is in specialist communication group at nursery and ds2 isnt speaking yet (18 months old) which I know is still young. But with ds1 having problems....

Yes, you can self refer. I did. It didn't occur to me to make an appointment to see my GP to ask them to do it! However, they will not put children under 2 on the waiting list.

You can self refer for portage as well ( I found out this too late - portage had moved and I didn't know where they had gone to so didn't bother).

Find out exactly what services are available in your area and in your neighbouring areas first before you do so. We live on the border of 3 health authorities and we ended up with Manchester where they don't even do speech therapy!!! (They just assess and give out instruction sheets with how to play peek-a-boo on). I was furious when we got referred to Bury to find out that children there are given block sessions every 6 months.

It is probably worth having a referral to audiology as well. SALT will want to exclude any hearing problems as a reason why the speech is delayed. Have you tried telephoning SALT to ask if they have any language and play sessions that you could go to with your child. These are a bit like a nursery environment but SALT are involved and have a system in place for direct referral. Good luck

thanks for that. I just want to get him on the waiting list really. He is totally different to ds1 so not too worried as he understands what is being said to him and copies ds1 far too much . Think I will take him to sessions where there is a salt present though
