DD 3.6 (ASD) seems to have a phobia? with other adults. Does not mind being around them but when they talk to me she starts crying hysterically. Sometimes she can tolerate other females it usually men that set her off. She also is going through a phase of hating anyone coming into our house again cries a lot - even with familiar people.

Does anyone know if this is common in ASD or can it be just a typical toddler phase. Has anyone experienced anything similar - I feel like this is taking over my life has been going on for about 8 months now and is always when someone else actually starts talking to me - could it be an attention thing?

Fears and phobias can be present in a lot of young children including nt ones, although in comparison my nt ds1 was easier to calm down and could understand much better our explanations re: his fears than my ds2 with asd, iyswim?

DS2 is 4, and does not like when people visit, with strangers he will hide under the desk or table and will observe them from the side and grunts and growls if they talk to him.
But eventually in his own time he does come out.
When a bit younger from about 7-8 months old to age 3, he did cry a lot when we were out visiting and someone new would enter the room or talk to him (ie: at my friend's house with her dh, ds was petrified and would cry and hide, or my nephew , i think he didn't like the sound of their voices which is quite deep).
