Would it confuse dd if I use words as well as pictures for her timetable?

It's just that tonight taking ds to his friends house and just think it's easier to write it down then draw. Dd is an excellent reader and understands everything she reads.
Will this confuse her if I use a mixture?

I use both....but always have ...so can say Alex understands etc...so have a go....stress its cos she's such a good reader/clever girl...a 'BIG GIRL thing' etc.
We have a 'clock' timetable in use...and each picture i did with both 'traditional clock face' AND 'digital'....idea being they will get used to both times being the same etc.

Would think the pictures aswel as writing would help not hinder. Being able to picture something in your mind can sometimes help you remember it.

My ds brings home a timetable every week from school which has words as well as pictures, if that helps.

Can say no quite categorically BH!!
May do with a child who is not yet reading but with your dd will only help!

Sorry, just catching up! I think you should use whatever she understand, words and/or pics. All pics should have the word on them too. Fine to mix them up.

I would actually disagree with you, Davros on always having words with pictures. Although this is obviously what one is ultimately aiming at (and of course the words help other people know precisely what the label is for the picture,which is not always easy)some people are hopelessly confused and distracted by writing.

I thought that all PECs should have the word on too? Not big but on the picture? Interested to know if that's wrong or not advisable though. I thought it was just to give an opportunity for incidental "learning to read" iyswim.

The pictures I use for visual timetables for ds2 all have words on. He doesn't seem to find it distracting at all. He can't read though (I hope! ) so maybe that makes a difference?

I was thinking more of general picture systems,davros,as opposed to PECS. I couldn't formulate a blanket rule,just know that I consider each case carefully and sometimes decide not to use them if I felt they serve no purpose,although of coures it would be fantastic if all the people I work with eventually gained some idea of the power of orthography.

Is PECS' official line to always use words?? I don't always,and have discussed the point at length with one of the trainers, Teresa.

She is responding really well to the timetable. Ds has been using it at the weekend and they ahve been playing together. So yesterday they did puzzles, reading and drawing. Can I just take this opportunity to say that my ds is an absolute star with dd and I honestly do not think she would have made nearly as much progress with her social skills without him around. He is so, so patient and just generally lovely with dd. You can see how much he loves and cares for her and I am really proud of him as dd can be annoying at times (that sounds awful but true!)
The really good one has been setting up a timetable for the toilet. Dd is fine going to the toilet but forgets to wipe, flush and wash hands so we have a pecs on the toilet telling her to do all of those and she does!

I thought it was a "rule" with PECs but I could be wrong or it could have changed. We always do it with pix, whether PECs or not for exposure to the written form iyswim. We also taught some sight words by having a bigger word on the picture and moving it down so it covered more and more of the picture until it was just a word.
Mizmiz, are you coming to the PECs international conference later this year? Jimjams and I have booked, should be exciting (our idea of excitment anyway). Would be great if you and other MNers came.

Fantastic blossomhill! They really do work! Mine has helped dd a lot already. Lovely to hear about how supportive her ds is. My ds is only a baby,but dd gaining confidence by talking to and interacting with him,babies demanding a lot less chat than adults!

Nervous about the msn thing,bh! Already spent too much time on this-more temptation would mean goodbye to RL!

just read this. DS1's school uses PECS to teach literacy. So his pecs symbol for drink is just the word. And his symbol for I want is now a tiny pic and the word I want. All the other symbols are still pic + word.
