We are considering moving to get some better support for ds who has autism. I have been told by our Ed Psych that where we live is below average and am looking around. Any info on your area would be great.

Around Manchester, South Manhcester, Derbyshire and Cheshire ideally.

Derbyshire is FAB!! My inclusion officer is the best woman in the world! I loved her from the moment she said "If it's a problem to X, it's a problem" about something ds1 was unhappy about that didn't seem like a big deal to anyone else. the school is also great (mainstream with fulltime 1:1) and they are genuinely included.

I am so impressed with my experience of support in Derbyshire. We've had a good service from them and no problems. We've not had to fight for anything - totally different story in Hertfordshire! Where we had to threaten them with tribunals, solicitors and all sorts! and my kids were treated shabbily at their school.

Hecates you must have a different LIO to me and my friend who has a different one as we call them obstruction officers.
Yours can't be ST as she is a witch tbh and I had to threaten tribunal to get ds into the enhanced resource.You would think she was paying for the resources from her own pocket
Autism outreach and SSSEN also is dependant on which one you get we have had good and extremely poor.
Best service seems to be from early years pre school support in our experience.
Experience of social services has been that autism isn't a qualifying condition for support from children with disabilities so rubbish there too.
As for schools very few with additional specialist services my son's school is 30 miles away. Only one autism special school for the more severely affected child in the county.POOR if you ask me

Hmmm...wouldn't go for Manchester itself - loads of fuss recently about them closing specific autism schools and resource bases and forcing a lot of ASD children (who'd been doing very nicely) back into mainstream.

Cheshire has some great resources. Stockport not wonderful for schools for HFA/AS but has good support services. Schools in Derbyshire very far apart but some good ones.

asd, no. her initials are SM and she is a fantastic woman. I admire her greatly. I think she's retiring / retired actually. there was a different woman at the last review. but she was also fine. Just went along with everything.

that's another thing - actually showing up to reviews!! In Herts nobody ever did!

Again, our SSSEN is great. Fab woman. My boys get 2 sessions a week each with her.

Don't know anything about social services (childrens) because we have never had anything to do with them. I think we've got a social worker. I think I saw one cc'd into some documents once or twice. But nobody has ever made contact, so I guess not. I won't let them get involved. I've seen what they can do.

ds2 repeated yr1 at our request and will now proceed through school with the new group. The head tried to tell us that they don't allow it, but we, erm, disagreed.

Only thing we've had MASSIVE problems with is SALT. Only recently have we managed to get an autism specialist and now we find out there's no SALT when you get to senior school!!

Well. That's what they think.

That's because they're not trained in autism! SALT is more about helping a child who has a physical problem talking, imo. But who wants to speak. Who works with you. They don't know how to deal with a child who probably could talk if they ever felt like it or can't talk and doesn't care, or is echolalic and tunes you out... you know?

If a child has a lisp or a stutter they know how to teach them. If a child isn't interested, they haven't got a clue how to help them! That's the problem.

Definitely and the provision has got worse as the years go by. Jack had a fantastic SALT through CDC whereas Lucy gets a community SALT and she is rubbish. Only thing that makes her any better than the last one is that she is well aware I know my stuff and will challenge any reports if I don't agree so ahe does check I approve first lol

Sorry i didnlt come back early - laptop problems. DS has a dx and we have to stay put for a little while as we are in the process of a statement application - but, he will need 1:1 in ms school (fingers crossed) so a special school wont be necessary. I have learnt through dd that SALT is rubbish where we live and thank god she has grown out of it, she never stops talking now.
