Wanting to take a really pro-active approach with DS to get over the feeling that he is impossible and reading up about ASD techniques.

What should be done for the highly verbal child? He is usually very angry seeming these days and nothing we can do is ever right.

What about visual timetables/cards or social stories.

Hi HIDTL, DD1 is not 'highly verbal', but we have just been advised to implement:

  • visual timetable
  • Choice board for snacks/ activities

The idea with both of those is that I am in control of what she gets to choose from, but she is in control of the choice she makes.

Mrs Turnip & moondog have been having a really interesting discussion about TAGteach here

DS2 isn't highly verbal, he has the vocab of a 2 year old. However, we do find that using visual timetables and some makaton does help with the meltdowns. We use some Pecs when we can't understand what he is saying, or when he is in one of his "I am not speaking any words at all today" moods.

social stories definitely good with a highly verbal child.

TotalChaos · 19/07/2009 20:50

pecs or visuals may be worth a try as he may find it less stressful when he is about to meltdown to show his feelings with symbols or have you explain things with symbols.

you might find this of interest about visuals/expressing emotions:-

I make them myself. Ds stares and stares at the photos (he has pretty poor eyesight tho...)

There are some books but it's best to adapt those to personalize. The books can be a good template though if you're new to social stories.

do you DL photos or take them yourself?
