So is one pyschiatrist report enough to confirm ASD?

Will be this be sufficient enough as evidence to school that my son has ASD, I mean im quite happy with it because i know he has it anyway BUT it appears that lots of you have this test and that test before finally being told your child has this condition, is there a need for a certain diagnostic test to prove 100%

The pyschiatrist said that at her clinic (it was private) they dont do further testing as my sons age they generally do them aged 7+ but she said she could find out from colleagues if i felt it necessary, but as she had 18years experience as a consultant pyschiatrist and seeing ASD loads she felt her opinion was correct. I felt a bit awful and did apologise incase i came across as rude, she was such a lovely lady

I think my sons paed for his medical problem will agree with it as when he witnessed my son having a turn at his clinic he mentioned ADHD/ASD

I was fortunate that my ex footed the bill for the assessment, no way could i afford it!

It should be enough for the school, but it probably won't be accepted by the LEA if you are trying to get help for your son unless it's confirmed by the NHS.

Consultant Psychiatrist's and Clinical Psychologist's are qualified to make a dx.

givememsleeporgivemechocolate: I've heard this many times - that the LEA may / will not accept a private dx. I went down both routes - firstly private, followed up by NHS Consultant Pyschiatrist.

The LEA did accept the private Pysch dx report of Aspergers and even accepted it as an Appendix in his Statement (we had not had the NHS one by then).

I think any LEA that refused to accept a private dx, provided it was issued by a suitably qualified Psychiatrist / Pyschologist would be on very sticky ground. Just because we paid for it doesn't make any less valid - and the private dx was done by a very eminent Professor of Develeopmental Delay Disorders, whereas the NHS dx was by CAMHS Psychiatrist.

Would be interested to hear if others have got their LEA to accept private dx.

Ah thanks for that wetaugust, my son will get lots of support at the small school hes starting at in september, so being on school action plus will be fine but i think secondary school will be tricky.

im glad your private report was recognised and accepted, the CAMHS pyschologist suggested i see a mental health nurse to learn how to do a star chart?!? im not kidding either, its in their report i received today, absolutely shocking!

Duh! They really do treat us as idiots. We probably know more about ASDs than a lot of them as we 'specialise' and research that subject wheareas they are jack-of-all-trades SN.
Makes me mad!

Could she have meant a STAR analysis - Setting/Trigger/action/result.

Its a method of behavioural analysis that is used to work out how to manage difficult behaviours.

Our school/inclusion team use these and i learnt about them on Earlybird.

Definitely star chart, it says "mrs....has attempted to use a star chart with liam to change his behaviour but we feel she would benefit from some specific guidance.....using a start chart for reducing his violent behaviour rather than rewarding his more acceptable behaviour", absolutely ridiculous. Why they didnt accept he had ovbvious ASD traits is beyond me.

Example again today, my son went to his aunties for tea for the first time ever, he loves his cousins especially the eldest girl. they all sit down for tea and my sisters boyfriend (who i think is a twat but there you go)said jokingly "all eat your dinner or you get a punch in the mouth" (ok stupid thing to say). I went to pick my son up and my sister was thrilled that he had eaten so much dinner, he is very very hard to get food down. On the way home my son said he isnt going there for tea any more as he will get a punch in the mouth from "that man", he took it so literally bless him, he ate a plateful of food because he thought he would get a punch in the mouth I am going to have be so careful with i myself say from now on.
