What sort of help will a paed report bring ? (asd)

Hi , ds2 is having help with SALT and a SENCO is also involved to help with nursery but he visits only once in a while.
The paed who saw ds2 (3y7m) told me after a lenghty consultation at the clinic that she thought that ds2 probably has mild ASD as she could identifiy some difficulties within the triad on top of a few obssessive behaviors.
She also pointed out several times that in her view ds'ASD was mild, and that he showed some reassuring signs with all the progress he has made in the last few months.
So she sent a report to us , to the nursery, to the SALT, to the GP ,...and this is part of the conclusion of this report that i will quote "B.. is a lovely boy with speech and language delay showing progress with SALT input. He does have some social interaction problems and obssessive behaviours, and i discussed with Mrs.C his mother about Autistic Spectrum Disorders. I also discussed about seeing him again in a few months time and review the need for an Autistic Disorder assessment. ..."
My problem is DH is very much opposed to having ds doing a formal assessment.
So if at the next appoitment we don't allow for him to have an assessment where do i stand with only the paed report that i have now. Will that be enough to get more specialist help (i'm not even sure what is available anyway) ?

I mean to say the conclusion of the report does mention ASD but obviously no formal dx have been made as of yet. So considering that ds' difficulties are mild and he is already receiving SALT and some help from the SENCO , do you think that having a formal autistic assessment will change anything or bring anything that will help ds further.
DH keeps saying we should wait to see how ds copes when he starts reception at mainsteam school in a year.
I'm so confused as to what to do now.

I would go ahead with a formal assessment anyway. Your DH's head in the sand attitude will help no-one ultimately, least of all you and his son.

Its little point also in waiting to see how DS will cope when he starts school; if he is on the autistic spectrum the more support he has in school the better. Some schools may wait for him to start "falling behind" his peers and this is no good at all. They may put him on School Action Plus which is fine in theory but is limited in scope support wise.

With regards to his education I would also start looking into obtaining for him a Statement of special needs now from your LEA. You do not need either school's permission or even a formal diagnosis to begin the process. You would need to write to the Chief Education Officer at your LEA and give them six weeks to reply. A Statement is a legally binding document as well.

What is a Statement of special needs from the LEA? What is its purpose? Sorry i'm quite new to all this. Thanks.
