whats going on with the melatonin presciptions?

aaargh...... nightmare trying to get dd4's melatonin prescription. pharmasist wouldnt give it and had to go to the hopital pharmacey and even then had to get him to phone the peadi's secetary. he kept on about not being licenced, and something about under/over 55's. eh? was completly lost by then, am blaming lack of sleep!.... has anyone else had this trouble or am i just unlucky?

oh there was something about forms and goverment stamp???- wish id listened but pharmasist was rambeling and i was falling asleep very tired.

Melatonin only has a licence to be prescribed for over 55s on a short-term basis.

That means that a Consultant Paed has to take it on his/her own licence to practice in order to prescribe it to a child.

Pharmacists are also responsible for making sure that any drug they dispense is suitable for the patient, because Drs make mistakes. So your pharmacist was covering his/her back.

The Melatonin is only given out to named order. I.e. the Company has to be given the name of the child it is for, before they issue it, and a Pharmacy can't just hold it in stock, I believe. Hospital pharmacies that give out Melatonin frequently on the authorisation of the Paed obviously would carry a supply.

We got DDs first prescription last week, but it took 4 working days to come in. The Docs at the surgery would only prescribe it once the Paed's report was faxed from his secretary.

Some pharmacist are funny about it, but as long as your childs paed wrote the first request there is nothing they can do. Put your foot down dont let them walk over you, I have had many a row with the lady behind the desk and now she just grows when saying my name, I take the meds, saying arrh great ds melatonin cheers lol
