DD much better now after mouth scenario and has been really quite chirpy. But this week, after breakfast, she's been really ratty. Literally shouting at me really purposefully with a sort of 'nah, nah, nah' vocalisation and eye contact (to really get her point, whatever it is, across). Have tried more food, a drink etc. Any ideas? Oh they wonderous mysteries of the non-verbal autistic child!!!!

It doesn't still hurt a bit does it (her mouth).
Have you tried showing her, her pecs if she uses them?

JakB · 08/04/2005 09:49

Well, I did wonder about that but it looks fine and it's only at breakfast, not all mealtimes? Yes, she does use PECS and has a visual timetable but she still shouts throughout!

This must be so frustrating JakB. Is there anything in her routine that's changed - eg. did you always used to read her story/put on the tv/take her to the loo or something after breakfast?

Blossomhill · 08/04/2005 09:51

Is she angry or just wants to make a point IYKWIM

JakB · 08/04/2005 09:55

HA! She has the spirit of her mother! Probably just making a point. Well Beccaboo, the in-laws have been down and they did start to bring her down for breakfast earlier than I would (I usually leave her in her room with milk while I get everything sorted). Maybe she prefers that?!!!

Yes sounds like the change may be upsetting her JakB!

What were your IL's doing immediately after breakfast? Did they say something the same each day? When ds1 does this he usually wants us to say/do something specific (so for example if my mum dished up pancakes- she then had to go and stand in the same spot in the kitchen or he'd get very cross). She may want you to say " good girl you've eaten your breakfast" or whatever they used to say (or did they give a drink at a certain point in a sequence or something? ds1 will never start eating until he has a drink in front of him even if he isn't thirsty - just shouts "i an een i an een" whilst hitting himself over and over again.

Well, problem is, Jimjams, that I don't get on with them brilliantly. I don't know of any specific thing they did that dd has taken on as a routine (I was tearing my hair out doing five hundred other things, glad of the help, you know how it is). And if I ask them, they'll take it as a criticism! Think I'll have to 'control' the situation a bit more next time. I can't just leave them too it...
