In a nutshell DD2 has medical needs but was diagnosed last August 2007 (at 2yrs 4months) with moderate/severe speech delay. She is now 3.

On a day to day basis she gets very frustrated, using Makaton is helping. Her understanding is very good, the problem lies with expressive speech, she has about 30-40 single words, not all intelligable to those who don't know her.

At present we are on the NHS SALT waiting list but she has had a block of 6 sessions privately with a brilliant SALT who has given me lots of ideas...

Anyone else out there going through this? I'm so worried as she starts school nursery in September and it seems like such slow progress.

I do so hope you find it useful. I saw progress (easing of frustration and fewer tears as my communication techniques improved) was the main initial sign after about a month.

There are some alternatives out there so if Hanen isn't helping after a month come back and others will post....

Thanks again, I have now found out why it has taken so long to get NHS SALT, I phoned on Friday afternoon and asked again why, after having DD assessed in August we are still waiting. The admin person explained the SALT we originally saw has been seconded and a locum has taken over but has inherited a large case load! Marvellous.

Anyway...the said locum is going to assess DD today at pre school. I'm not sure how it will go as neither have met before...we'll see, hopefully it will lead to her being offered some intervention soon, in the meantime we will carry on with the private SALT even though we are struggling a bit to afford (thank goodness for DLA!)

LR x
