Petition for the proper diagnosis and treatment of autism in France: please sign

Could you please sign www.leapoursamy.com/firma.asphere?

France does not diagnose or treat autism/ASD according to the recommendations of the WHO. Autism is frequently still treated using psychoanalysis and other, totally inappropriate, ineffective and sometimes shocking treatments. This petition needs 100,000 signatures (from any country) by the end of December 2008.

The organisation behind it, Léa pour Samy, is a bona fide organisation fighting for the proper diagnosis and treatment of autism in France.

I will sign the petition. France has long been a scandal in the autism community for its treatment of disability and particularly Autism (which they used to, or maybe still do, classify as a Psychosis). France was taken to the European Court a few years ago, see
socrates.simbiose.com/document.php?did=57&mid=23 and, although this focuses on educational provision (or the lack of it) it also covers services for adults. But it seems that there has not been an improvement in provision and services in France, not to mention attitude. A friend told me that she took her family, with DS with ASD, to France on holiday and really noticed the dirty looks they got and total lack of acceptance. Her DH evenn noticed it! The next year they went to The Canaries and the people were lovely to her DS and wanted to spend time and him and try to communicate with him more than they did with the rest of the family!
If you saw my post a while ago about the TV programme "Her Name is Sabine" made by Sandrine Bonnaire, you would have some idea about what it is like! There was not much response on MN, too hard to take I think as it was very distressing and disturbing. Even when they felt they had found a good place for Sabine the Doctor who was asked to classify Autism didn't seem to know anything about the Triad of Impairments and described it somewhat in psychiatric/mental health terms which is worrying. I think things are a lot different here although nothing is perfect.

Signed. I've always found the staff at Disneyland Paris to be very helpful, and accepting of autism, but perhaps thats the American influence?

Anna8888 · 13/11/2008 13:28

I was at Disneyland on Saturday and agree that it is very well set up for, and considerate of, all kinds of SN. But I think that is down to the company.

Signed! It is the reason we decided against a move to France (that and my terible french)! However ds is usually treated well in rural France- perhaps they just think he is english!
